In recent news, the turd has received some changes/servicing including:
- Full fluid service
- Ecliptech shift P2 – very neatly installed & no wires showing
- Aggressive wheel alignment (higher negative camber for F + R)
- car has been corner weighted, total weight of 1099kg's including 80kg driver (in future i may decide to strip interior/air con etc.)
- New carbotech xp10 pads
- New custom braided lines, the previous which were a second set replacement, were still rubbing at full lock, so the issue has finally been sorted with a new fixed design that stays clear of the wheel
- Oil filter relocation kit – the filter is larger/flows more, again cleanly installed, utilizing factory holes (no drilling)

This was all in preparation for a 11 Oct WP day.. fun was had as usual. The car felt much more confident turning in at speed – so I think the wheel alignment attributed to that. Braking was solid as with the new pads, I drove it pretty hard (so I think I did), achieved a new PB of 115:34. I am still struggling to get through to the 114’s & im either not driving hard enough?! Or I have reached/am reaching the limits of the current set up of the car – I personally think it’s the latter.. as my lap times are getting consistent, feedback from professional instructors is that i am steering it really well.. correct lines & braking points etc.. although im pushing it, i do make slight mistakes, i guess this is part of the learning curve.

Anywho, the car feels good & still enjoying it plenty.. the only thing that’s in the back of my mind is more power/straight line speed. What can you guys recommend with respect to things like cams + ECU, is the power gain justifiable? during this day it was quite warm but i was still able to thrash it non stop, i probably got the most laps in. so for me reliability/seat time is key. Some pics & footage as per usual..

Here is the new filter location, nice & stealthy:

the new braided lines design:

The TURD.. such a nugget, but still provides good thrills;

This was my quickest lap & new PB – bonus footage at the end, hope you enjoy!

until next time, keep it real.

Thats a clean oil filter relocation kit! Did you make it all up custom?

Car looks good to me as well. Did corner balancing the car make much of a difference?

Yes it was a custom job (mount + hoses). Work was done at Corse workshop.. wasn't cheap, but quality.

It hasn't been corner balanced.. that would require relocating bits to alternate corners factoring in the driver.

Was corner weighted only & I was told that out of the box they're fairly balanced. This coming from a shop that deals with only prestige euros & race cars.

Happy new year boys & girls.. here is the latest news regarding the blue the turd:

- New joy fast gear knob
- Serviced the car recently.. oil + filter.
- Still getting some advice for the diff I want to get – looking likely to happen within next 2-3 months
- Attended a v-sport twilight track day on 23 Jan
- Beat my old PB by 4 secs!
- New PB for the GP circuit is 159.58
- Drove it hard & spun 4 times.. the 4th time I went sideways over a ripple strip & the car scraped somewhere underneath as I saw some sparks flying.. shat myself in the process as I was facing the wall mid corner at 120+kph.. luckily no damage & i'm alive, but need to jack the car up & have a really good look. If something were out of wack im sure I’d feel it.
- all in all, was a good outing - got pretty consistant & learned the track/attacked much more confidently
- I’ve purchased a miata roadster short shifter kit – the tall angled ones that positions your hands closer to the wheel.. I’ve heard good things about these, so will get that on soon. i've found the OEM throw is pretty long compared to other sports cars.

Potential mods I have in mind:
- Vented carbon bonnet – looking at garage vary
- Some sort of proper GT wing for added down force
- New diff (for skids, shorter ratios & traction aspects)
- new wheels & tyres, im surprised how long my rs3's have lasted, these will eventually go this year sometime me thinks..

Otherwise car is still providing the thrills! It just needs some more power at some point, if money permits... I think with a bit of straight line power it would be a weapon.. & i would dominate some newer more expensive cars out there.

Here is what interior looks like now – id say its done however, soon I will have some custom side bolster protectors made up for the sparco shortly, cause these ones are crap:

An encounter with an EP3 civic.. enjoy!

Fun & games.. keeping it real.. over’n’out.

WOW!

Looks fantastic even just sitting next to the pump - I love this colour and the dark green, especially when they've had the NB8C headlights fitted (smoked SE headlights even better).

Time for power mods. That white eg was flying when VTEC kicked in.

i spontaneously booked in another twighlight day on the 8/2.. i thought, why the heck not. As usual fun was had, highlights of the day;

- no drama's/car performed well/thrashed all arvo
- stiffened my suspension settings slightly, car felt planted on long high speed bends
- didnt spin or come off the track this time around
- incremental & steady improvements made at each session
- new PB of 158.64
- getting pretty consistent (ran 8 or so laps in the 158/159 ranges..

here is some footage with race driver Emily Duggan.. her feedback was a little unexpected! i think i might give the car some rest until it starts cooling down, & may concentrate on making some important mods for upcoming winter.. aiming to test the car out post mods at wakefield, im hoping i can break the 114's at least which is pretty slow i know.

until next time,
J.

Gotta be happy with the compliment!
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

yeh man.. sometimes you gotta look back & see how far you've come.. though i like to keep it real (humble) as much as possible.

interesting off screen convo we had was that she reckons that ive reached the limits of the car (in current set up), reckons i should try another more powerful platform.. i spoke to her about going turbo, (lightweight but quick car), she reckons i need to way it up.. do i spend 10-15k on a proper forged set up that can handle the abuse.. or do i go for something thats built that way from factory so to speak.

even though this thing lacks power.. its just fun/go kart like.. & reliable. At some stage though i wouldnt mind something with some 8alls.. it did get me thinking though.

I went through the same though process a few years ago when my engine blew. Basically, the options I was looking at was an Evo or STI. Minimal mods to go pretty quick around a track or up a hill climb. In the end I forged the Mazda. My main reason for this was track day consumables seemed to be very high on the evo/sti when compared to the mx5. Tyres and brakes would be a killer if you were a regular in either mitsi or subi. You’ll have to spend more to get the mx5 up to sti/evo speeds but tyres and brakes will be much cheaper. And if you look at track speed in America with the super miata/time attack car, you don’t need 400hp to win events.

My (very bias vote) do the Mazda.
