MX5 mania turbo build

Somewhere around 100x 200rwkw mx5s and counting. All nice and reliable. It's not just the number its the techniques used to achieve it that count. That's why there are broken 150kw SEs and SPs everywhere but 200rwkw cars that are dead reliable.

But if he is your regular mechanic and tuner, do what he says and play nice.

Took the MX5 to SMSP last week and the best clocked time of 1.52.9.

Not sure if that's quick but there was a Porsche GT3 that made me feel I little slow lol

Looking to get more out of the turbo. Can I rebuild the bottom end with forged parts and not worry about the head? If so what is the estimated cost?

Rods, pistons, rings, bearings, head gasket, studs, oil pump, other gaskets and seals roughly $3k-$4k depending on what you get. Plus machining, mechanical work and a tune.

Considering on selling my MX5 and moving to a 350z

Thoughts?

What are non engineered turbo MX5's selling/valued at?

First question would be why? What does the 350Z offer that the mx doesn't give?

To my mind it's bigger, heavier, and slower than your mx, and will probably cost more to maintain and run day-to day (and especially if you're going to track it, because, well, it's bigger and heavier).

But it's still a 2-seater and relatively impractical. And the soft-top version looks... :shock:

so I assume you're looking at the HT.

In the end though, if you want it, go get it, right?

I'm seeing turbo-d mx's advertised around for 9-13k at the moment and an engineered NB advertised for $15,500 recently - not sure what they're selling for though.

Don't. Whatever you do in life don't do this.

I made this mistake many years ago by selling my turbo'd Clubman and buying a 350Z new and regretted it everyday until I bought another MX5 last year. I only kept the 250Z for a bit over a year. It was a nice enough car but it's a generic cruiser. It's slow, doesn't stop or turn well and has only a marginally larger boot than the MX5.

I've had a lot of cars over the years, enough that I've lost count, but the 350Z while there's nothing specifically wrong with it, IMO it doesn't match IRL what it should looking at the specs on paper. May as well buy a Corolla if you just want simple A to B transport which is where the 350Z really sits. It's without doubt the most disappointing car I've owned.

I see a 350Z as a middle aged ladies car. It kinda looks OK but cannot perform (the car not the owner!)
There are hotted up Zeds out there, but why? You may as well go a GTR if you want a fast Nissan.

Ok it sound like a no go.

There isn't a reason for it other than I do like change. My MX5 is only used on the track.

From what I'm reading it sounded like the 350z was very capable. I did read it would cost more on track given it heavier which increases load on wearing parts

I'll hold onto the MX5. I do like the look and sound of the 350z. Love the sound of a performance V6. It would be awesome to put a VW r36 engine (wife's car)in a MX5.

I have a scirocco as my daily. Given its turbo and not engineered I don't want to push my luck driving. Here and there I do take it out but it's not very often. Drives great for a street car. And for some reason gets plenty of attention by Japanese car fans

Aesthetically I've never been a fan of the 350 or 370, they're just way too bland IMO.

Like the new Mustang, they're really a mediocre Grand Tourer than a true sports car since they're heavy and their handling is disappointing compared to a stock MX5/86.

Not sure why you'd want to spend money on a 350Z for the track if it only allows you to go faster on the straights but much slower on the corners compared to an MX5 and will cost you a LOT more in consumables (pads, rotors, tyres).

Do try and test-drive a 350Z through "the twisty stuff" before you buy it, then immediately drive your MX5 on that same route to appreciate the difference.
