This arrived late in the week, and was installed this morning... (a delrin shifter tip bushing and upper shift boot heat shield if you don't already know)

Image

So, as requested by Beavis and KevGoat, my impressions follow. In an effort to be a bit more scientific than usual, I took the car out before making the change, top and windows up, and loose stuff removed from the glove box, to have a good listen. There were a lot of different noises I don't usually hear because I almost always have the top down/open - but that's what I expected I guess.

After fitting the delrin bushing (and changing the turret oil AGAIN, because it already looked muddy) I took the car out, in the same state, on the same loop of roads. I heard no new / different sounds. However, I did feel a very slight increase in vibration through the shift knob, along with an even more 'rifle bolt' action to shifts. In retrospect, it's not all that surprising - delrin seems to be a harder material than whatever the standard bushing is made of (nylon?).

In the end, what interested me in this delrin version is it's (advertised) longevity. Hopefully I'll never need to bother with the shifter tip bushing again.

This is weekend number three, so here's some photos before and after fitment of the new frame rail braces.

Shiny, no?

After fitment I took the car for another test loop, same conditions as for the delrin shifter bushing (yesterdays post in this thread). With a reasonable NVH baseline having been established, I can report that the chassis is definitely quieter, and vibrates less. Although I didn't have the opportunity to drive one when new, I imagine the car may have felt this way off the showroom floor. More 3K km rather than 300k km. 'Jinba ittai' indeed.

I intend to post further details in Alex2550's new frame rail brace thread.

Superb work!
I do believe the oem bushing is indeed nylon.

 yeah, I've seen much worse on the forums too. Which reminds me of something I meant to say in my report after the braces were fitted - the differences I experienced may be somewhat less than what others will hear and feel, due to my frame rails being in reasonable nick to begin with. Still a worthwhile mod for my car, though.

Did you find that the short shifter required more force to change gears?
I thought I read you say that but couldn't find it hear so apologies if I'm confusing you with someone else.
I also followed the install video but didn't add any grease. Maybe my shifting would be easier if I did.
I'm very happy with the improvement and the quality vs dollars spent.

:D I was commenting in your build thread while you were commenting here. Again, glad you like it! I agree it's great value for money.

No, I didn't specifically mention the additional force required to operate the short shifter 'cause I figured beavis had covered that well enough in his description of the product. It makes sense, of course, when you consider the physics involved.

Mine might be a bit easier than yours due to the additional lubrication. It's not hard to add now, if you don't mind opening up the turret again. I used some PTFE enhanced grease, but it probably doesn't matter what you use as the shifter pivot is well up/away from the oil in the base of the turret.

Ah, probably read it on beavis' page.
I'm definitely going to add some lubricant.
Will try some Teflon gearbox paste I have and see how that goes.

You're inspiring me to fit my frame rails too. Keep up the good work :)

I gave some additional feedback yesterday in Alex's frame rail thread. I don't think you'll regret the effort fitting them :DIY:

Hey, speed, I've been thinking about this a bit more. What sort of shift knob are you using? I skimmed your build thread but couldn't find it. I ask because mine is about twice the weight of stock. I wonder what difference that makes?

I still have my OEM knob, I'll give it a try on my next drive and let you know my findings.

I'm still using the OEM knob.
Was just thinking yesterday that I woukd like to try something aftermarket. Do you have any suggestions and is twice as heavy a better feel when shifting?

At 450g, almost exactly 1lb, I believe there's plenty to choose from. Moddiction is one example manufacturer oft quoted on the big forum. I thought it was an improvement on the stock shifter, but I've not compared it to the OEM knob on the short shifter, which I'll do next weekend.

Here's a pic of my custom made one:

Wow.... half a kilo of knob! :P
That actually sounds impressively heavy.

As mentioned, there's certainly an increase in shift effort directly related to the change in the shifter pivot point - PHYSICS!

I know I said I'd test this out this weekend, but it got the better of me and I went out after work this afternoon on a comparison drive. Interesting result, and not what I was expecting. I drove the loop first with the heavy knob, then again with the OEM. To cut to the chase, I found the action of the lighter knob to be faster, but also less positive, than the custom knob. I could live with the OEM unit, but I'm happy with the slightly slower, smoother action of my 450g knob.

Thanks for comparing against the OEM knob.
Last night I pulled the trigger on a 1lb 3 inch tall black knob.. just because.
Can't wait to get my hands on it, errr :)
