My thoughts and impressions as a newbie to Racing, MX-5 Racing and MX-5 Cup
I like the rules and regulations. Seems like to race at the very front you need a turbo but you can get fairly close to the front and have great racing without a turbo and without spending an awful lot.
There is good racing right through the field. Seems to be the cheapest way into motor racing in that you can stay registered and get by without a trailer and tow car.
Racing a Pulsar or Excel would be cheaper to buy the car but you can't use one of those as your daily drive.
If you really want to prove yourself as a driver you need to be racing near identical vehicles and there is none of that for MX-5s in Australia. But if you want to race a MX-5 and not spend too much it seems that you can find someone to race with in MX-5 Cup.
And everyone is so friendly and encouraging.
Racing is so different to Supersprints and track days (everyone there is really friendly and encouraging too). Racing is more fun IMO.
I really like the idea of no-contact. I used to watch road racing in the 1960s at Warwick Farm, Catalina Park and Oran Park. The father of a schoolmate raced a Elan. Contact in those days was unheard of.
I'm not into trophies, pointscores etc. so the class system is really of little interest.
I'm into having maximum fun on the track at minimal expense and I'm observing lots of that in MX-5 Cup.
Can't wait for round 5 and I'm expecting at least 1 other 'newbie' joining in on the day.
Whats happening to the MX5 racing??

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
Round 5 came and went.
I had a lot of fun but still no real racing.
Again i was quick through the corners and walked over uphill and along the straight.
Round 6 is on Sunday and i am expecting things to be a bit different.
I don't have a $20k engine but i do have a significant torque increase that should allow me to race with the back markers.
Grid start in race 1 should tell.

Down to 1:12.5 at the supersprint yesterday.
Hopefully i can qualify under 1:13 today to be in class D
I still expect to be last on the grid but at the start of race 1 maybe not last into turn 2.

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
My best lap in qualifying was1:13.1115
That placed me 15th out of 15 on the grid for race 1
Then I got down to 1:11.2521 in race 1
Race 2 I only got down to 1:11.6490 but I did overtake Matthew on the second lap
he got me back on the 4th lap
Race 3 was fantastic for me. I beat Matthew off the start and into turn 2
Then Steve had a spin after turn 2 and 3 of us got past
On the second lap Ian had a spin at turn 5 and Kerry had to come to a stop to miss him
I found a safe way through and Matthew was delayed a bit.
Half a lap later Kerry was on my tail and stayed there for the rest of the race.
I was lapped by Verne and Todd but finished the race 10th out of 14.
Real racing at last!
