My Big Re-Paint from Sunlight Silver to White/Red/White

Postby billybunter » Sun Sep 03, 2017 5:26 pm

Once I figure out how to move my photos from postimage to this thread I will run my re- paint from here, I'm missing most of my photos from the main thread so I think from scratch this would be the better choice

Very good chance I will go as planned -white but I am a fair way from that stage yet with just rubbing back in progress

Although I did have a very good paint job on the car I still think I can equal it again so apart from a few $$$ in material and a few hours lost -no harm done

Two photos of the car

One in NT about 2 years back and the other about 3 months ago after the new red paint job

Just in case it's your first visit to this thread and wondering what was wrong with 'big red's colour - well actually nothing really. It was up until a few days back a pretty good paint job. There was a slight paint problem which was repaired and after that I thought it was time for a change.

I'd say it will take about a good 100 hours to complete this job. Probably quicker if I used a power sander to rub back the surface paint but I could also do more damage to the body PLUS I think that I could do with the exercise too - so that's why it will be a wet/rub job.

Once again the re-paint will be in acrylic as I know that paint the best and I was pretty happy with the end results from the last paint job. Not sure yet if I will clear coat it or not.

I might actually go down the path of paint stripping the boot and under the front and rear bars to save a bit of useless time consuming rubbing it out. Time will tell there

So the pictures are working fine from postimage and thanks to Lokiel for helping me get them on the move.

I plan to keep this a more serious re-paint thread with a bit of info along the way and the drama- and there is always drama - and save the crap talk for my build thread

If you're taking votes, I'd love to see this car done in aquamarine, turquoise or teal...

Please NOT teal, too "Port Adelaide" for me (diehard Crow's supporter).

At least the rim colour will probably work with any body colour of your choosing - I like the fact that it's a dark colour and that you can still clearly see the rim details from further than 5 feet away (IMO, black rims really "drab out" a car and make them look heavy since they disappear into the blackness of the tyre and wheel well - don't mind them as much on all-black cars though but I'd never own a black car, far too much work trying to keep it clean).

Aw hell, I liked Hellrot, not so much the white stripe but yeah could easily live with the red/black. Now its going back, at least do a crystal metallic white.

You would be better off plasti dipping the car if you are going to change colours so many times. Go on YouTube and check it out.

- gets "Ratty" very quickly :(

If BillyBunter did this on his outback trip it would have come back looking like a shitty beat-up rat-rod.

Probably the way to go if you dislike washing cars as much as I do.

This paint job might be put on hold for a while. The weather has been extremely cold lately at around 4C daily with bad wind chill plus I have to go pick up the new motorbike early next week.

After that I want to put a couple of bike videos together for the bike guys and a guide to buying these bikes. After all I've bought 10 of them so I know better than any-one

Anyway I will get back to it sooner or later. Not as if the car is going anywhere

welcome back bill

well lets see what's happening. looks like nothing much here so you'd need something to give it a kick in the guts  anyway I have been out riding the new bike and I gotta say far better than driving that miata friggin car - I actually think I've had more fun on the bike lately than the past 2 NT runs.

anyway like it or not I gotta get down to it and continue on with the rub back and paint the friggin thing before I end up with surface rust or worse as I did attack a perfectly good paint job  only this car does hold great sentimental value that and 300 rwhp is the ONLY thing that will keep it in the yard for ever

now for those who don't know if you ever get the chance to drive a fiat abarth - not the mazda lookalike I mean the real one-those cars are a lot better than you think and they also cost a lot more than you think  overall though a pretty good car even for a FIAT

so a couple of video for the viewers to look at and to take the boredom away on a work Friday. I suppose I can start playing with this project again and get into it in between the odd ride - plus get a few in on the bike too
