the advice about driving might or might not be correct, but if you simply feel like you want to mod the car then go for it. For many the fun of the mods is as important as the driving.

I used to enjoy the modification process, doing it for myself and others in the 1970s. Making a living partly by building rally cars.
Now i pay others to do it and just enjoy the driving.
I am enjoying MX-5 Cup but will enjoy it more when i am not driving the slowest accelerating car in the field. Equal slowest will do me. Then i can race.
I drove at South Circuit last Sunday with the 2.0
I'll be there again tomorrow with nothing changed except the engine. Looking to beat 1:08.6
I will report back on Sunday.
Then next week i have 3 days at Wakefield, finishing with Cup round 6.
PS I have been told that some have gone from 2.0 to 2.5 and gone slower.

Well i didn't go slower
1:06.945
36 timed laps on the day and i was improving all day, my best lap was my 33rd.
Previously I could hold full throttle in 3rd gear through turn 5.
Now with more power im entering 5 with more speed and think I'm approaching the limit of the tyres.

and why you going 2.0 head?

go 2.5 everything and throw cams at it

Best I can tell the engine does not fit under the bonnet with the 2.5 head on.

Goodwin make 'engine drop brackets' to solve that problem but the 2.0 head give higher compression.
What would be the advantage of using the 2.5 head?

2.0 had 104 kW at the drive wheels.
On the same dyno this 2.5 engine has 138 kW at 5900 rpm
Puts me up in class at MX-5 Club of NSW events.

However as an engineer I understand that power (hp or kW) does not mean much.
You can't measure it. It is a derived value from measured torque and speed (rpm).
Torque is the significant factor. Both the max' torque and the shape of the curve.

This engine measures at the wheels: 261 Nm at 2763 rpm and drs to 258 Nm at 4220 rpm

Towed to Wakefield. Checked in for SOTS. Started first session. Cold track, cold tyres, just a sprinkle of light rain.
I took it very easy and started to build up. 1:18, 1:17, 1:16, then engine went into limp mode and as i got back to the carportit stalled and would not start.
No cranking.
Pushed it onto the trailer and back to Deckspeed. Some weird computer glitch that went away for no apparent reason.
Try again tomorrow for the supersprint.

Don't bother putting in a 2.5, won't make much difference.

2.5 does fit with stock mounts

Once again, when you are doing a 1.09 at wakefield in the car as it is, then start to think about doing mods.

Correct - it didn't make much difference. Just enough.
Enough for me to sit on Matthew's tail in race 1and learn more in 6 laps than I have in several supersprints and club days.
Enough for me to lower my PB at Wakefield from 1:14.84 to 1:11.25
Enough for me to pass Matthew in race 2 (he got past again before the end).
Enough in race 3 for me to finish with 4 cars behind me.
Racing is so different to supersprinting.
As long as you have enough torque to keep up along the straights and uphill it is the fast track to reducing lap times.
It is also IMO much more fun.

MX-5 Cup round 6

My best lap in qualifying was1:13.1115
That placed me 15th out of 15 on the grid for race 1
Then I got down to 1:11.2521 in race 1
Race 2 I only got down to 1:11.6490 but I did overtake Matthew on the second lap
he got me back on the 4th lap
Race 3 was fantastic for me. I beat Matthew off the start and into turn 2
Then Steve had a spin after turn 2 and 3 of us got past
On the second lap Ian had a spin at turn 5 and Kerry had to come to a stop to miss him
I found a safe way through and Matthew was delayed a bit.
Half a lap later Kerry was on my tail and stayed there for the rest of the race.
I was lapped by Verne and Todd but finished the race 10th out of 14.
Real racing at last!

Good work Nuddy. Great improvement from your first round.
It was interesting catching up to the 4 of you, all black cars, jostling for position in race three. It was like the seas parted for me as I approached Matthew and Ian on the main straight. I will try and post a video of race 3.
2018 you will have a ball. It looks like we should have some interesting and varied events including a Nationals hopefully.
