As I suspected there's been some moisture get into that seam over the years. I think I've got it in time. I've cleaned it up.

Now I'll squirt some rust converter in there through a syringe, & replace all that sealant with nice new Sikaflex.

My boilermaker mate wasn't available so I had to man up & attempt the seat mount repair myself.

I'm the first to admit I'm a crap welder, but I'm pretty happy with this one.

Well, the time has finally come. It's primer day tomorrow (Tuesday).
I've just got some masking up to do in the morning followed by wax & grease remover, then etch prime & primer. I hit all the plastic parts with plastic primer today & resealed the seams in the boot.
I've converted my workshop to a spray booth (of sorts).

My apprentice lost his mate of 11 years last week, so he won't leave my side. Poor Ol' bugger.

This is pretty epic, mate. I don't have much to say because I've only dreamed of attempting something like this, but I am reading along, and I'm sure others are too! Keep it up :BROADY: :DIY:

Very sorry to hear about your apprentice's mate, give the guy a hug and back scratch from me.

prior to the spray I usually hose and then sweep down the floor. I then spray while the floor is still damp. I think it help keeps dust movement under control, not all but enough to make a difference.

probably not that important on a prime but I think its not so much the dust its bigger particle stuff like fine type hairs which is by far the most annoying when they land on a spray job

either way it would be hard to beat a booth. never been in one to try it out but I bet it takes a lot of the problems out of a re-spray, but a garage is not bad either compared to just out in the backyard firing the paint about  and I've done a few of those too

if I were in your position i'd look at 3 things

1. check very thoroughly all areas masked, if you have help go over and re-check their masking. especially on the edges. it's too late after you throw colour. it must be picked up prior or you just have more work on your hands

2. buy a pack of disposable gloves and put them on when applying the final rub over with the grease and wax remover prior to applying the colour. one cloth to apply and the other to wipe off the residue. keep every-one away from the car.
don't let any-one touch it with their greasy finger. it's in this part of the work where things go wrong and it happens quick. cleanliness is extremely important here.
when grease mark come up in a paint job its immediate and very disappointing and its all down to the person not doing the prep right. happened to me a few times

so check all your masking, make sure your job is spotlessly clean and the spraying is pretty easy or easy if you can get 20c in temp  ....not easy here

Haha. My wife's lack of interest in this project just makes your typo even funnier.

So it's been a huge day & I'm rooted, but there's a coat of primer on everything including me.

This project is put to bed now until mid October, because I'm taking the wife to Italy for our 30th Anniversary.
At least there's no bare metal left to go rusty.

Catch you all then.

I just went for a shower (scrub), & had a flashback from 40 years ago when I was a 1st year apprentice. Scrubbing with a stiff brush, every inch of your body that wasn't covered by clothes. All I can say is thank Christ I'm not a nudist.
