Yup, that's was roughly the cost I got quoted for a complete rebuild of the gearbox. Decided to take a leap of faith with a gearbox I got through a private sale.

You're quite right, I contacted 5 mechanics around my area and all quoted me around $600-$800 just for labour (excluding consumables) which is fair enough. But ended up going to a mate's shop and spend the day together with an apprentice keen to learn how to pull and install a gearbox. The actual cost of the gearbox was around $200 ($100 gearbox + $95 freight) purchased off a private seller. So $400 or so went to compensating for using his tools, equipment and paying the apprentice for his time. Win-win.

It was a bit of pain to pull the gearbox out though, had to remove cat back, drive shaft and PPF; maybe we did the longer way?

On top of gearbox swap, also did the following:
- Replaced rear main seal (it was leaking engine oil)
- Resurfaced flywheel
- Replaced pressure plate (there was a small crack!)
- Replaced clutch and bearings

Also used 75W-85 (API GL-4) oil for the first time for gearbox oil instead of 75W-90 and it seems to be working well so far. Will see how it goes.
