500+on e85 if you have the boost and head flow.

Thanks Dann.
I'm pretty sure I won't have the boost or head flow for 500, if I can get into the 300's on e85, that'll see me through until my next mid-life crisis

Thinking of just the bottom end here, how much of a tradeoff between service life and power is there compared to say 8.5:1 pistons making 280WHP on e85, or is it more related to how the engine is used (say daily driver vs redline on a track all day)

Re: Cus' NA6
To answer my own question; I think the answer would be "not much tradeoff" it would depend how much you're ringing it's neck.
While looking around and playing with the idea of a spreadsheet for inputting values as measured from the engine when I get around to that part, I found the following.
http://www.speedtalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=204010#p320689
And also in PDF form, from some kind of school:

Re: Cus' NA6
"New" head arrived today.
The only engines I've seen in peices are Cleavland 302/351's ... so seeing how tiny the valves are made me giggle, and the itty-bitty piston diameter....
My pulldown has made it to the valve springs, time to work out what tool I need, then buy it!

Youre talking about removing springs right?

I am indeed talking about removing the valve springs!
Is that a "Valve Keeper Remover and Installer"?
Is there a specific size I need?

I used a drill press with a fabricated fork (6mm rod with a u shaped end brazed on to it) tool to compress the springs with the valve head supported on a wooden wedge. Worked a treat and cost nothing
(Head was removed from the block obviously)

I got it from Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012S61IO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
it takes abut 2 seconds to remove the valve keepers.
maybe 15 seconds to secure the spring back in place .
the removing parts is magnetic. you will not lose the valve keepers.

yes it is.
it comes it 2 sizes in a box. you will be using the smaller one.
the larger one will be useless. Unless you start building LS1's or Cleveland...

Also, have a look at GQM's video using a very similar tool.

Re: Cus' NA6
Things I've said about the 1.6 engine:
"I'll build my 1.6"
"There's no need for a built 1.8, a built 1.6 will make enough power"
"It'll be more demoralising for people to loose races to a 1.6"
To everyone on the internet that says building a 1.6 is a wate of money - here it is! bigger pistons, bigger valves, new intake manifold ...
... hang on, that's not a 1.6....
It turns out that everyone that's not me was correct, this one time, about this one thing....
It's a "bit" weepy, so I'll freshen it up with gaskets/seals/o-rings/water pump/timing belt and I'll throw it in the car, and see what happens.
Things to sort out: how much of the engine loom I need, what to do about a starter (current one is struggling with cold mornings) and altinator, and running extra wires for the sequntial injection, the VVT and "stuff"

Re: Cus' NA6
On my red NB we used that tool to change the valve stem seals with the head on (using compressed air in the cylinder).
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Re: Cus' NA6
Am guessing the engine came up cheap. Does seem to be the best way to go.
Not only do you get bigger pistons and valves but you also get a better flowing head.
Unfortunately I'm too invested in a 1.6 to consider it.

Re: Cus' NA6
Dear Diary.
Today I was [--] this close to no longer having an MX5.
How? Too much time driving the (big) work car and forgetting that nobody ever sees an MX5. What I thought was going to be someone rolling through a giveway turned out to be someone rolling into, and then accelerating through a give way.
Much pucker. Many swearings.
Thank you past-cus for fixing accelleration enrichment so it no longer stumbles when you throttle-mash at 50km/h.
Aside form that, nothing has happened, drove it halfway across the state last weekend, motor is still untouched in the shed, but I have a girlfriend now, and her mum's shed has a pit and an engine hoist, she's a keeper! (the girlfriend, or the mum, I'm not fussed)
