If you spend the money - not cheap I guess - you want to know that the installation gets approved in your State. Do installers guarantee or arrange for the tests / mod plate etc.
Its blatantly obvious from ads we see on this forum from time to time that some cars are turboed but are not legal and that probably also means they are not insured.

The EXACT same thing is true for any and all factory turbo models which have an intake or an exhaust or upgraded intercooler.

The difference is that people are comfortable driving illegally modified factory turbo cars for some reason.

Would i swap mine... yep "BUT" only for a SLR 5000/Monaro or something similar to relive childhood memories.
Having mates that deal in VW help as well as having a current VW GTI and a fairly current FJ Cruiser parked in the garage the SP would be gone in a second if i had to downsize the fleet.
The GTI is a much better drive.
At this stage of the game the real collectors haven't come looking with the correct dollars yet.

I wonder how many SPs are still stock, probably a higher percentage than SE's.

Dann, back in the day engineers weren't keen to approve modified near new cars, and aftermarket ECUs were in their infancy, meaning it took a lot of time and money to build a turbo MX-5 that behaved nicely in traffic etc, and cost even more to get it legal. BJ built a beast of an SP replica, but it cost big dollars. Sean T built an awesome turbo NA for a lot less, but spent a lot of time testing and tuning to achieve the end result. I looked at both of these cars before I bought my SP, deciding I had neither the time nor the pockets to go down that road. Today it would be an easy decision to build up an NB - the base cars are cheap, the process is well proven and the costs are known. Being an old fart from back in the day, I'm happy with my SP though

Exactly, but with most of them getting flipped, crashed, run over by a bus or pushing 150,000+ k's, soon only a few of us are going to have to endure that horrible factory tune !

just as a side note, this is why this forum is great.

Hi I bought an SP as I wanted something that I would leave stock and a car that may go up in price over time.
Well it didn't stay stock but everything I have done is reversible and I have kept everything I have taken off. To the extreme of I wanted to powder coat my strut brace blue, however wanted too keep the original one as the sticker is iraplaceable.
So I bought another bar and powder coated that.
The original look of the SP was very average and I wanted mine to still look like a SP so most of my mods are under the bonnet.
I have done some subtle touched to make it look like what I thought a special edition should look like.

Honestly money has been spent Lately on Patrol and a 5 week trip up in Cape York, hence why i have been quiet on here. Decided that my current 660nm at the wheels wasn't enough so the Patrol now has 1145NM at the wheels :twisted:

turns out over 20PSI pushes Patrol valves open so race springs in there now, needless to say wasn't just boost to get that number........was a great trip as well hahaha nearly rolled her on the old telegraph track at Canibal creek, still a nice crease in my drivers seat cover from a pucker up on that one. Going from mid 30 degree days back to milking cows when i got home in -5 degrees was a bit rude but.
MX5 is the focus again now.

oh and we got the missus a CX5 GT in the diesel. fingers crossed its a good one.

Just to hijack the thread 1 post more- give Clive Cams In Ferntree Gully VIC a call (03 9758 5977) and just let them know what your after with the cams- just another option besides tighe.. they done mine and work well.
