Not to mention that totally ruins the whole "plugin" aspect.

In saying that, I wouldn't be shocked if there are universal voltage regs out there, hell I know motorbikes use similar, so it would likely be easiest to just wire one of them in and send the regulated voltage to the ecu etc.

If someone like Ronin is looking for a cheaper solution.....

MS2 PnP $1500 landed including WB 02
MS3 PnP $1700 landed including WB 02
if he is unlucky he'll have to pay 5% import duty + 10% GST on top of that so the Ms2PnP for his NB8A would be closer to $1600-1700 landed

speediuno $250 +
WB 02 $200
2nd hand altinator & crank pulley $150?
IAT $15
CAS $100?
a bit of mucking around with wiring.
add another few bits & pieces and you are looking at say $750 all done thats half the price of the MS2PnP

If he is capable of doing his own harness. you wonder why hes not getting a DIY MS2 for about $750 about the same. I havent done the sums on that....Thats an estimate.

But for an NA6.....this is great

I just did the numbers on a MS3 DIY and its more like $1300 inc. WB + import duty & GST.
according to https://trubokitty.com

makes the ECU in this thread quite attractive.

There are a number of standalone alternator controllers around for the NB that would all be cheaper than replacing the alternator etc.

Eg: http://westfieldmx5.sgrkempen.be/alternator-pcb/

You can also make the circuit if you want for about $10, but that might be getting a bit DIY for you

So, I did something silly and pulled the trigger on one of these  , getting the IAT sensor from noisymine too.
Waiting for it to arrive and looking at viable options for a VTPS and decent Widebands, any suggestions??
When I get started i'll start a garage thread and you can all laugh at my misadventures  I'm sure there will be many

So much for wanting to keep the car stock!!!

I use the LC2 controller & Bosh 4.9 sensor. There are plenty other ones which are cheaper. I got mine from Amazon for around $200 AU. that incudes a gauge. The gauge is ugly and Ive resorted to using my phone directly in front of me. But I run a mega-squirt. & MS Dash.

Ive not pulled the trigger on the VTPS. I run on MAPdot. on heavy acceleration it goes just a fraction lean but nothing drastic. I haven't pulled the trigger just yet as I'm currently looking at rebuilding or upgrading to 1.8 VVT. Patchy's engine is tired. Also just found a massive puddle of oil under it. Not sure if its mine or the Golf that parked there this morning...... I have the sneaking suspicion that its the German engineering & engine building. I can say that cause I'm a Kraut.

As far as the variable tps goes, pretty sure the NA8 and NB had them from factory and it's only the NA6 with the old "on/off" type

I wouldn't put any money on my memory though.

You are correct.

NA6 have an on/off type VPS

upgrades are BMW, Holden VL, are a few. But you need to be creative attaching it.

Yes, all the info I've got says the NS6 TPS is basic on off.
The Holden VL VTPS with a mounting plate seems do-able from interweb reports.
I've seen mention of a plug and play BMW VTPS but can't get exact details of which one, conflicting information on this one.

The LC-2 kit on the innovate website doesn't have a guage, is a guage important?

Its nice to see where your AFR's are going.

Ive mounted mine in one of the round heater jets. Its just a little off too far on the side. although better than looking at a laptop.

On the phone which is mounted pretty much in sight. It tells me target AFR & Actual AFR amongs a few other things. I can see whats going on. I cant tune on the phone though. But can log. Its kinda nice to know where to go looking. If the EGO Correction is over 5% you just go looking for that part of the map when you do tune. Or refer back to it in your log. ( at the start good chance it will be out more)

Check with the OP if you can attach your phone via a cable ( i cant recall right now). I know hes been talking about wi-fi.....not sure if has it though without going through the whole thread.

Either way works. I just find the phone easier. When the phone is attached. I never look at the gauge.

https://www.diyautotune.com/product/innovate-standalone-gauge-kit-w-lc-2-blue-db-gauge-3795/

that works out to be about $350 posted. Maybe even more

check Amazon. You might just get an ugly colour display but I got it considerably cheaper.

less postage too $35US on Amazon instead of $60 US

Check other systems as well. Thats just the one I chose.....

Dont bother about getting the exsaust bung either. If you get the Bosh 4.9 it fits into your exsiting exsaust. Unless you want to run 2 sensors....

Id install the WB first see how it goes. Its just a matter or changing one wire when you install the ECU later
IIf & when you install the WB this particular one can run on a narrow band signal and you can connect it to your standard plug just near the CAS
some others can too.

In terms of more low priced wideband controller options, I've used each of the below with good success:

Thanks guys,
so much info, so much reading to do, and we haven't even got to tuning yet

I'm so in over my head with this, but it's going to be fun :D
