Paint Matched Respray (WA)

Postby imblue » Mon Jul 03, 2017 1:30 pm

Hi all. I'm looking at getting some of my panels and my hardtop resprayed. Does anyone have suggestions as to where to go if I'm looking for a really good match? I have an nb :NB8A: (10AE) so two stage paint. I'm in Perth btw.

Alternatively, does anyone have suggestions of where else I could ask for more specific WA advice?

Thanks in advance!

For anyone looking at this post later, I've got recommendations for Uneeda Tyre and Smash Repairs (Josh Dale, Cannington), and Rod Willis (not sure how to contact him, look in MX5 club of Western Australia. I'll update this when the job is done.

Painters will normally buy the correct colour i.e. they dont try and get it matched. The colour has a number. If you want paint matched by eye and tested it can be done by specialist auto paint suppliers and they can make notes on what the mix is. Its not wise to go down this track unless the paint is really old and faded etc. Any decent paint shop has their own preferred suppliers who provide certain brands. You readily get paint mixed to 40 year old original formulations. The days of painters mixing their own paints is probably long gone- its specialist work and it would take a spray painter a long time to make a match and probably no chance to replicate it. If a professional is dong the paint job then they will get the paint as well. If the pro paints it and you supply the paint and it does not match then thats not the painters fault.

Unless you pay big dollars you won't get a match you will be happy with. We have all done it and not been happy.
Best bet is to get the whole car painted. It won't cost that much more.
If you are looking for a couple of panels and a hardtop you will be paying more than $1000
You could easily get a closed door whole body paint job for $1500. Maybe less.
The paint is nearly 18 years old now so unless it's been really well loved it probably needs a good going over anyway.
A couple of costs of Hi-Fill and it will be straight and mark free.
2 coats of colour and a cost of clear and your car will be stunning.
Then agin if your not that fussy a cheap paint job on a few panels you could probably get done for $700 from any panel beater.(they hate being called panel beaters)

Hello bear,

Do you have any good recommendations in Sydney for a full closed door respray? Been looking around lately and there are a lot of people recommending Hollylea down in Campbelltown. What are your thoughts?

I'll 2nd that, in Sydney go to Mick at Hume Smash Repairs.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

i'd be curious to see what quotes you guys in Sydney come in with. what material is used and how long they guarantee the paint to hold on. in years not months

if I could get the right deal i'd move my car out to the big smoke to have it painted back to white.

both auto paint shops here in the country quoted me $10,000 ea when I want a full body re-spray and I had no choice but to do it myself

I still think big $$$$ are involved here for a good paint job but maybe I will be pleasantly surprised so if quotes come in i'd like to see them in writing :) as I could be very interested in running mine to Sydney for a full paint

yeah, I probably ended up putting a good100 hours into the job with the strip/paint and re-assembler and final polish. just a pity it wasn't this good in the paint when 'white' but that may change

I decided to call the spray shop myself. thinking if I could get it done for that price I might just let them do it!
unfortunately it's not the case. $4,000 will get you an outer or exterior body spray in same colour - not including engine bay or any type of panel work and that price could increase subject to inspection of the car. never bothered asking on door jams and the boot.
now a full colour change like in my case from red to white would warrant a complete rub back and that would be pretty expensive if done properly. in other words you want the paint to stay on.
that was the area I was interested in but that was cut short pretty quick in the discussion. it was going to be expensive and I still think not much different to my quotes here in the country.
so unless you do it yourself or get some-one willing to do the job for near nothing my opinion is- NO PRO- will touch a car and work for near nothing! but if you have a hit and take your time you can do it yourself for under $1000 and not much under either

Getting my Bonnet repainted at the moment. $800.00
Asked the spray painter who is a good guy for a price for a closed door respray on whole car.
He said $4000.00. so I was talking out of my arse with the $1500.00. Sorry about that.
He said he would have to take all trim off and do inside the doors and it was a heap of work. He is really busy though and I don't think he really wanted to do it.
I will give Mick at Hume a call and see what he says.

Yep, I'd say 4000+ for a good job. Ive seen 2500 close door jobs and it was evident that the car got a respray.

Heard that Hollylea at Campbelltown area does closed door resprays for real cheap, around 2k approx.
