2002 NB MX5 SP Tare Weight - Urgent please help
Hi all,
I have a special and unique request.
Does anyone have sn official owners manual from a Mazda MX5 SP that specifies the official tare weight.??
If the tare weight is not available but kerb weight is, then please provide it.
My best answer thus far is that the mx5 SP kerb weight is 1141kg from red book.
But I need the manufacturer's official number.
I am working through a compliance issue with my certifying engineer and this information or lack thereof of may derail my project.
This project will involve certifying my Ford 5.0l v8 conversion into an nb mx5 and I don't want to fall short on a pathetic legality and not see my car hit the road. Especially when the engineering is all done and waiting for the engine and drivetrain to be installed. I have much invested in this project and I simply have to make it a reality.
I need an official tare weight of 1100kg to proceed with the certification
A normal nb has a Tare weight of 1090kg, the SE is 1093kg, the SP I am hoping will be over 1100kg.
The SP kerb weight is 1141kg from Redbook which implies an 1115 kg tare weight or thereabouts. But it is not mazda official....
The heaviest variant of the nb mx5 is the SP as I have heard anecdotes that it is 25kg heaver than the SE.
But i need official proof. If someone out there could help, with a picture of an owners manual showing the weight or some other reference I would be most grateful.
I am hoping there is someone out there who could help me!!
I have asked Mazda directly for an official statement as well.
I look forward to some feedback
Cheers
Engineer

Well the 'official' tare weight is listed on the rego papers here in NSW so you just need an owner to have a look at their papers for you.
Would a copy of the rego papers from another owner's car be sufficient for your purposes?
Maybe you could get in touch with RMS in NSW and see if they can tell you listing from their database?
We're a fairly helpful bunch hereabouts so it shouldn't be long before you get an answer.
BTW, would love to see a build thread for this little project!

Just weigh the car and submit its real weight. It's that easy.
Get a shop with a platonic machine to weigh it and sign off on it.

You do this research first before doing anything else.
He doesn't have a complete SP to weigh.
Unlikely to weigh more than an SE though.
I bet Mazda will probably give you a stock NB weight.

The car needs the capacity compared to the final weight not its current weight. To figure that out in advance he needs to weight it and his components and to get it legal he needs to submit a final weight.

Hi thanks to all for the speedy response. Just a few comments...
I know that the rta has the tare weights on the rego papers but they don't always list the correct one. As the different models have slightly different tare weights but the rta may list the same number for all. I need the heaviest model's tare....the sp.
I cant just weigh the car and use that weight. I need the tare that was used to comply the car via it's approval number on the compliance plate.
So if there is an sp owner out there that can send me a pic of the registration paper via pm...exclude name address section.
That would be great

Well the SE weight is correct at 1093 so that's a promising start.

I always thought there was around 40 Kgs extra weight.
That cast manifold, 2560 and cast dump pipe has to be close to 15kgs then there is 2.5 meters of steel inter cooling piping and the intercooler.
I know the front sits down nearly an inch on stock suspension due to the extra weight.

My Google-fu finds articles from the period quoting a 30Kg weight penalty.
Then also;

Kerb Weight 1107

It's claimed that a total of 215 parts have been added or modified to create the SP - yet total vehicle mass has risen only 3 per cent, from 1085 to 1119kg. Yes, you read that right - a power lift of 39 per cent with a weight increase of just 3 per cent...

All good. But it all depends upon what Mazda complied the car with. I reckon it could have been left unchanged.

Re: 2002 NB MX5 SP Tare Weight - Urgent please help
Hi all,
Thanks for the info.
I have come across the 1119kg kerb weight figure...and another reference for 1141kg. But it is the tare weight I need to confirm.
The autospeed article is interesting in that it gets quite specific on the weight increase.
My rego it says my tare is 930kg...but it is also listed as 1090 kg on the rms database...when you check up the compliance approval number.
I can only hope that an sp rego paper might have an extra few kgs...
Last resort is Mazda themselves....i just fail to see how the sp could be the same tare weight, with the extra stuff bolted to it.
Failing this I will need to challenge the legislation....not fun
Failing that...i either can the project...heartache...or I use an anemic Toyota v8....but I can't make myself do it...
Or I go turbo stroker...not fun either...
I hope the kg gods look favourably on me...
Thanks to everybody for the awesome responses!

Tare weight printed on my SP rego papers says 1090kg.
There is no such thing as an SP owner's manual. They were delivered with standard NB8B owner's manuals.
