How do the undersized tyres affect your lap times?

Not at all.. Cause I run a set of r specs on the track :wink:

But even on the road in my favourite little backstreet racing/test facility the re003's tyres grip way beyond my bravery for Street driving

Got around to tackling the brakes over the long weekend.

Removed the inlet manifold. Picked up a 1/8 bsp tap and a couple of fittings. A vacuum block and some 1/4 vacuum line. Image

Mounted the vacuum rail to the firewall which worked out great with the factory booster line.

I've learnt to leave the windows down to prevent his fingerprints. Not much I can do about the exterior though :roll:

Have to wait a few days to get out and road test it though. The new concrete driveway is still drying....

Got Down to Wakefield on the 23/4 for the club track day.

Car drove well and the brake booster even made an appearance. Pedal almost felt spongy after having nothing for the past few track days.

Still getting to grips with Wakefield, I feel like every lap I take turn 2 differently. Also time to up the revlimit a few hundred rpm. It runs out if puff coming down the hill into the fish hook and across the hill its kinda in-between gears.

Still, that aside I managed to shave another 8 tenths and get the car well into the 1.09s! Goal achieved :D

I also took the car drifting on Anzac day. I have done a few stages of motorkhana beside but never tried To slide the car. It was awesome! :D car performed great and after a few loops I started to get a handle for the car!

gawd I recall the Day Ed broke the 1:15 mark on a club day at wakefield.....ha ha......going back to 2000.....but the track was slightly different layout probably 1-2 seconds slower. I was in the car too... probably gave him a little better balance. It was my first time on a racetrack as a passenger too. I just about threw up. Good times

Yeah I recall seeing photos of the old layout somewhere but can't remember how it's different. But even this year after they repaired the top of the circuit (maybe not repair the track but the curbs and run off) it might save a little time. They are slippery if you get on them but kinda inspires a little confidence that the road isn't about to run out compared to the old curb/dirt ditch haha.

These days at club days id say half the field is probably running under 1:15. But I guess better Tyres and suspension are quite cheap/ readily available compared to back then when these cars where relatively new.

yea totaly different times. Turbos were very rare and expensive.
I don't recall if ed's car was a 1.6 or 1.8 but it was one of a handfull of race cars but probably with the bare basics. Nick & matilda were in a 1.6 but perhaps not too far behind. That motor which ran Nick & Matildas race car is the motor now in patchy. Although it had ITB's and somewhat more agressive cams to what is in PATCHY is.

Stuff thats possible now on a fairly low budget & availability is so much more. The information & knkowlege required is also a lot more mainstream. In those days. Advancing the timing to 14 deg....was a major mod :lol: :lol: :lol:

That corner as youre heading down the hill. at 47 seconds ....the left hander. It was straightened out to suit the V8 supercars better. It was around 2002-2003 or there abouts.
I haven't been at the track for a very long time. But the best I ever did on a stock motor was around the 1:16s at that stage but semi slicks. Slammer was doing like 1:12-13's Craig wasnt far behind him in a stock motor but 1.8.Slammers NA6 was modded though, cams ECU & lots of added lightness roll bar LSD & so on. While today that would be the run of he mill type of stuff. In general Owners of MX5's were too scared to do much modding to thier pride & joy. were talking more like 10-12 years ago. The times everybody is doing compared to then.....massive difference

Thanks Stan,

Obviously I have done alot to the car to get there but on the same token the car is still full weight besides ac & ps. The only other things lighter would be the seats and battery I guess. I was at the stage where I almost started ripping it to shreds to save weight because racecar. for what though a tenth or two and then have a car that pains me to drive on the road. I think I'll keep it close to what it is so I can enjoy it with my son when he's a little bit bigger rather than it being in the corner of the garage and never being able to share it with him

I am with you Dennis. Don't strip it out until you have to. My car still has most of the carpet in. but the AC is gone and a few other things. I seem to be just losing weight to balance the added weight. I weighed it at EC on the weekend with a full tank of fuel it was 1096kg. I put it over a weigh bridge about three years ago with 1/3 a tank of fuel and no roll car and it was 1100kg. not much has changed. Pull something out, add something else.
Just enjoy, it looks, sounds and goes great.
