For a new car maybe one of those clear imperceptible films can prevent or minimise the inevitable stone chips Car paint will probably outlast most cars if looked after - modern paints are far superior to the old systems. Tinting is of course out of control- you are supposed to be able to identify a driver or even see their eyes but today that's a lost battle due to many being too dark.

Talk about inevitable alright - 19000km and eight months of ownership and I'm losing count of the stone chips in my front bumper. Couple of small nicks on the hood and a few tiny tiny bits of glass missing but not cracks thankfully. Might have to get it resprayed for it's first anniversary.

I don't see too many non-legal tints in Qld but when I do they stand out like the proverbial! That's asking for a fine from the constabulary.

At what ambient temp do metal surfaces on cars get so hot that wax evaporates?
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

Is there a prize for the correct guess? Or you don't know and are genuinely asking?

I'm told that 30 degrees and direct sun will get metal hot enough to evaporate even the most expensive wax. I know there are some detailers on here so am interested to hear their opinion, or from scientists etc.

Picking her up tomorrow and wanted to thank everyone for their feedback so far.

For anyone who is interested the paint protection I'm getting is called "protektiv". Had this applied on my current car and still going strong.

Will post a picture tomorrow!

1) I was always taught to do an oil change around 1,000km on a new car and wondered if that's still a thing?
2) what products do you recommend for washing the roof? I normally foam rinse, foam, rinse, foam, two bucket rule, rinse and then dry. Wondering if the roof is safe to use foam on ect
3) anyone else having problems with the Nav? It sends me in circles all the times and the garage hasn't seen it before - picture attached.

Few more questions.

1. No longer a thing. However, I changed mine at about 2500 km for peace of mind. Still going well at 121,000 km
2. I usually only use running water and a microfibre mitt. Probably use a very mild solution of car wash once a year at most. Roof is still perfect after 9 years.
3. No idea, only have a Garmin "stick on".

I reckon Younge you are just asking silly questions- this is barely ABC for cars.

If you're new to MX5s it's perfectly understandable. Please help make the newcomers feel welcome.

If asking how others take care of their pride and joy is silly I'm sorry for coming across that way.

I've never owned a soft top and wanted to learn the basics from the others who have experience.

Thank you everyone for ther replies so far, will try and use a bit of google next time.

1,000km oil change is no longer a requirement. I might be tempted though if I ever bought a new car.

Get the dealer to show you how to use the nav. If it's broken tell them to fix it while keeping you mobile with a loan car.

Driver'a manual probs tells you how to clean the roof. I just go through a car wash every year or so.

For this one, check you haven't still got your last waypoint as a destination (e.g. your home address) and then where you want to go logged after that. Clear all waypoints if you see this and see if it still does it.
