I recently fitted this unit into my '99 Pajero. I bought the generic Mazda adapter from an auto shop. it only requires one of the two plugs on the back of the unit, the big one.

I couldn't get the light dimmer to work. The unit's light just went on of off with the main light switch. I then learnt the dimming function works on a three wire system. Something to do with + and - 12v pulse feed which I don't understand. I located the relevant wire on the main harness and bought a second adapter to cannibalize a connector from. The generic adapters don't have provision for that 3rd wire.

Before you start get the radio wiring diagrams for the car, the unit and where you need to tap into the "pulse" feed.

Thanks for your input so far guys.

Does anyone know which MX-5 this stereo comes from? It has a 6 stacker CD symbol on the top right hand side.

Used in the NB8B (2000 onwards)

But, it was a fairly standard Mazda unit, also used in the tribute, 626, and probably a few other models.

Plugs for the unit can be purchased from autobarn etc, which go from unit to ISO plug.
Then you can get an ISO to NA mx5 adapter if they have one, or alternatively cut the iso plugs off and wire it direct to the loom in the car.
