Gearbox piece on drain plug
Not exactly sure what to call it but when I was changing my transmission fluid today a piece of something was on the magnetic drain plug. Can anyone shed some light on what it could be? It's roughly one cm long and a couple of mm wide.

That looks like a synchroniser key (sometimes called synchroniser blocker bar). Usually 3 on each synchroniser hub/sleeve

I presume it's not ideal for the future longevity of my gearbox?

I'll leave that call to a qualified transmission mechanic.
FYI see item 17-243 on attached image of MX5 5 speed gears.

Had a chat to a mechanic friend this morning who said It's not ideal but to just keep driving it till it craps itself. Lucky 5 speeds are cheap!
