Interesting part is.....she keeps becomming leaner &leaner at idle Ive readjusted the idle a few times now . felt i had to do it again this morning. I have it set at 14,2 on E 85
she idles ok at 15.5 very smooth. gets a little lumpier at 14.2

She'll be running for that weekend. she's using a heap of oil......still haven't received the valve seal thingos

even if I do order the Injectors today....it will be a good 4 weeks before they get here.

in this mornings drive to work I hit 93.8 % Duty cycle. it was also running just a tad lean.
graph93.png

the VE has been adjusted accordingly.....but Ive also pulled the trigger on some 360cc GTX blacktop injectors.
will be interesting how those injectors idle & how economy will be.....as they are just as old as my current ones. If i come across some RX8 injectors for real cheap I'll probably get those eventually.

I should have those injectors early next week . It should take all of 15 min to install them. 2 seconds to adjust the MS and i'll have the rest of the week to get the idle right for Saturdays meet, if they turn out to be not so clean.
The idle currently is close to 900 give or take a bit and very stable so if the are as clean as my current ones....I'll be a happy chappy.

Without a doubt......you know about Fawlty Towers...right?

This following evening of fiddling with Patchy fits right into Fawlty Towers Risk management at its best.

Through the week I received my AN-6 braided Teflon Fuel lines. I was so eager to get these on....cause engine bling....and feeling warm & fuzzy on the inside.

so I proceeded to take bits off with the patience of a 7 year old let loose in a candy store....you know upper tower brace, air bypass valve & the fuel rail & so on.

Of course Friday night, it was raining.....tools were getting wet I just wanted to get it done & go for a drive & do some tuning & logging on the mega-squirt.
I also parked on the front lawn...which indecently needs a good cut.....but no....I had to do it there & then....I was on a mission. In hindsight I should have sat down for 5 minutes & meditated a bit....But I just sooooo wanted to get it done.

In the afternoon I'd gone to Supe Cheap & Bunnings to get all the bits. Clamps & cutting blades for the air tool.

First thing I did was drop both fuel rail spacers....Fark!!!!! How can I forget about those....dammit!!!!! Last time I lost one never to be found again.!

Then I dropped No4 injector....but at least it didn't drop below the car.....I could see it just below the back of the head on top of the gear box....phew.

I was really annoyed at dropping those spacers though....i was getting high blood pressure just at the tough.

Then it came to cutting the fuel lines to length....Id been watching videos & reading lots to get that right. Nailed that.....

Installed the lines. Got them as tight as I could.....

Then it was time to get the injector out.....of course I dropped it.... FFS!
And while I dropped it, the lower injector seal came off & as I was trying to salvage it....my injured thumb dropped it as well...... aaaaarhhhhhrg!!!!!

So then it was time to try to find all the dropped bits.....I found 1 fuel line spacer on top of the alternator.... then rolled the car back to find the other spacer....and fuel injector....but no sign of of the lower grommet.

over the last 2 days I recon Ive spent 2-3 hrs combing the front lawn like the detectives going over a crime scene on my knees trying to find it.....its disappeared. Its probably in the back of the engine mounts never to be found again.....or something

So then i put it all back together again.... cause i had to get it off the lawn.....

put the ignition on....fuel everywhere. Ive also gone & broken the top injector seals when pushing the fuel rail back on.

you're all welcome to bag me.... give it to me.....I thoroughly deserve it.

a new set of seals has been ordered & new injectors are on the way due on Monday....this has been put on hold until mid next week.....
Patchy was rolled onto the concrete driveway......for attempt 2.

hope you're laughing at my miss adventures.....cause that's what I'm doing right now.

I feel your pain.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I have felt that pain many times. I now dread doing any work at all on my car as I know that for every fix I do there is risk to a number of other components that they will be lost or broken, causing a smallish job to become a large job. I now have a psychological limit of no more than one job between events, meaning about 7 or 8 jobs per year on the car MAXIMUM. And most of those are small jobs, like changing a set of brake pads. I now worry so much about stuffing things up that I think I would remove the engine before trying to change out injectors in-situ. This really is a PITA job in my opinion, and you are a brave man for attempting this without the psychological preparation that I wish I had for all the times I really stuffed up a job!

I am sure you know your mistake was trying to get the job done in a limited time period. This is nearly always my mistake too. What I think I can get done quickly causes me to take short cuts...no, I don't need to remove the whatsit to get to the thingy. Wrong! One always needs to remove the whatsit to get to the thingy. And the job won't be finished today. It took me weeks to fit my oil cooler, after assuming it would be an easy weekend job. I rushed a bush change on my Falcon and broke a rear brake line. I damaged a cam belt pulley while drilling out a bolt in a balancer pulley because I didn't want to remove a bunch of parts...the list goes on. We need help.

its soooo true although I do enjoy tinkering. My problem was darkness , rain , rushing and most of all.....impatience.

I hit that unmotivated type of tinkering in about 2009 that lasted until about 2 years ago when for some reason.....I found the passion again....or passion found me. Either way I do enjoy tinkering. I'm actually looking forward to installing the new injectors if they arrive today. But the danger is...the seals will not arrive until tomorrow. I'm going to look forward to the moment of turning over the key & get her started.....without fuel leaks & go for a spin.

No fun at the time, but at least you can look back on it with a bit of chuckle, & ultimately you're closer to your goal than you were.

You can get dld shirts and tops and block up the spaces below where you're working. Thus when u drop stuff it falls only 10cm onto something soft.

Running these injectors proved to be problematic.

Ive pressed the go button on the Rx8 injectors.

Not sure when I'll have them. Even if I do get them tomorrow , I'll wait until Sunday to install them. Just incase there are problems. Want to make sure I get to this Sydney meet on Saturday morning.

Got stuck without a source of E85 last night....  so i filled up with 98. what I should have done is put 2 L in & get to the place which has E85.

car ran like a dog.

anyway Idle was like holy christ.......when I changed maps.....not sure why it was that bad. leaning out big time. There would have been 3 drops left in the tank....Then a full tank of 98 went in.....
But this morning I managed to get a pretty decent idle. Just running on Open loop at this moment. I should be able to get it back on closed loop by tonight.
perhaps this is a blessing in disguise.....gives me practice in tuning.
But the Flex fuel sensor is back on the agenda next.......then vTPS. Then ....paint job
