There are heaps of examples of Bills Of Sale here: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=bill+of+sale+for+car+example&rlz=1C1GGLS_enAU327AU327&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwjRp83kiP3SAhVDgrwKHQJLDgsQsAQIJQ&biw=2133&bih=1067#imgrc=_

Pick one and copy/print or produce your own using one as a guide

If you have the QLD Vehicle Registration Transfer Application (Parts A & B) and a Bill Of Sale https://www.support.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/formsdat.nsf/forms/QF3520/$file/F3520_CFD.pdf, you will have plenty to prove ownership for NSW rego (and Police) purposes. If you are driving the car on its QLD rego, you should be covered for CTP and will just need your own vehicle accident damage insurance.

It's a bit damp up here at the moment.

Every time I took the car registered and with the plates on, drove it home and then once I got a QLD roadworthy/safety cert (supposed to be done within a fortnight), I took the car down to DOT and handed in the interstate plates and got new QLD rego. They take the old plates and sort that out with their interstate counterpart. I was also able to get a refund on the unused rego (and CTP/Green slip) by providing the interstate authorities with proof of handing in the plates (QLD Transport give you a receipt) and showing that the VIN was now officially registered in QLD.

If the car is being sold registered, there is no need to unregister and get a permit to drive it home. Those permits have a limited use and lifespan, meanwhile when you get home you'll have to get the car to a mechanic to get a roadworthy cert.... And of course if you buy on a weekend....

Buying interstate is simple - don't overcomplicate it.

Though, it says that rego cannot be transferred to a person who doesn't have a Queensland address. I was all down to drive it with the QLD plates until I ran into that bit of information.

Yes, but you're not transferring the rego. You're buying a car that is registered but that YOU will cancel the rego on when you get home and get it registered in your home state. It won't end up in your name as a QLD reg'd vehicle.

Write out a receipt when you collect the car, and get the seller to name and sign it, also note the date and TIME of sale. Also get the rego certificate off the seller and safety certificate/roadworthy. With all of that info, you'll be able to show the details to Police if you get pulled over, and if the seller went and got their photo taken by a speed or redlight camera an hour before you picked up the car, you can prove that it wasn't yours and you weren't driving at that time ;)

Edit: Looks like a couple of others beat me to it... As you were :)

He'll (this is the part where I'm a bit skeptical) add me under his registration (or somewhere along these lines) and we'll communicate from there in order to cancel the rego. I suggested that I mail the number plates to him to allow himself to cancel the rego in Queensland. I really don't mind driving under a permit -- not really sure why he feels it's unfair for me.

You're overcomplicating it mate, it really is simple. Ref my original post. There is no need to post plates back or get your name on the rego or any of that nonsense. Pick up the car, drive it home. You never have to communicate with the seller again.

+1 to this, don't make it too hard.
I bought my NA from NSW, the seller sent me copies of the rego and his licence to prove he was legit. I sent my daughter up with cash in hand, she picked up the car with a receipt for proof of sale and drove it back, no spares etc.
Seller cancelled the rego once I let him know she was home, I got a RWC in Vic and registered the car, simple. I still have the NSW plates, no need to send them back.
Cheers

I would REALLY think about not travelling up the coast - we are at Tweed Heads on the border, and have just received evacuation advice - the pacific highway will apparently be impassable later this arvo

really this is just basic ABC. A sale note- its just dead simple common sense. The details who selling to who with the description of the vehicle date etc. Technically its not bad idea also to check that the seller is the owner and there are not encumbrances on the car- small cost and maybe saves a heap of problems. People buy cars interstate all the time and they drive them to their State and you are supposed to re register in the State your live in within X months etc. Do it by the regs / guidelines and GET the car insured before pointing to the home State,

It depends on the seller. I have dríven cars with QLD plates on it and sent them back to qld owner who can cancel the rego and get whatever value is left of the rego and CTP which you cannot as a NSW resident. Have also had sellers who want to cancel the rego as I don't believe they can dispose of the car to an interstate person if it is still registered and would remain in their name until you register it in NSW hence why some sellers insist on cancelling the rego first

What works NSW to QLD is not the same as QLD to NSW. If the owner lets you drive it registered with his plates on it then so be it and stop worrying

Holy moly, lol!

Thanks for all your responses.

I called up both QLD and NSW transport authority and they both told me the same. All I need are:
- A copy of the rego papers
- Hand written receipt as proof of sale with the above details mentioned in the thread. Nearly forgot about the 'time'. The NSW attendant said it only needs to be brief.

That's it. Then I'll go about my merry way to do the blue slip and usual NSW rego steps.

I'll be using New England Highway for most of the way. Do you know if the road closure if isolated to Tweed Heads? I'll only be using the Pacific Highway when we're near Newcastle.

Link should have the route we're taking:
https://www.google.com.au/maps/dir/Toow ... 33.8688197

The coast route seemed to be too long of a drive when it was available on Google Maps.

EDIT: The entry point we will be using for Pacific Highway will be in Twelve Mile Creek, NSW. No traffic updates on Live Traffic NSW.

If your destination is Toowoomba, then you need to check out the warnings for Laidley and the Lockyer valley. If your destination is Brisbane, then that is even more problematic. Check the live traffic app and sea warnings. The rescuers in our area are getting pretty ticked off at non -essential travel...

The owner just told me to ring him to see which route I was taking. He informed me that it would be all fine. It's currently 23C and sunny down there. No issues have arisen.

I understand the creek in Warwick QLD is over the New England Hwy right now, all runoff- I'd say by Saturday though it should be all good....

Yeah, was literally just on the QLD Traffic app and spotted that. Apparently damage to the pavement and roadworks are on it for 2kms of New England Highway. Should be fine.
