I would like to avoid the white rectangle if I can.
I have seen black numbers on white cars and white numbers on dark coloured cars.
Cams says the competition numbers must be "clearly visible to the satisfaction of the Clerk of the Course" and the supp regs specify:
"They must be clearly legible to the timekeeper, and be of a contrasting colour to the surrounding bodywork"
My car is silver. Can i use white numbers? or black numbers? or maybe dayglo orange? or do I have to use a white rectangle and black numbers?

For speed events, CAMS specifies that the supp regs for the event will specify the requirements for competition numbers.
Your quote is from the NSW Supersprint supp regs, but the requirements may be different at other events.
The MX-5 Club supplies square magnetic numbers (black digits on white background) to entrants for the numbers 1 through 60 at club track days, and the supp regs state that where the competitor decides to supply their own numbers, that they "are to be clearly visible from at least 200 metres."

Nuddy, yes there is no problem with black on silver.
The white magnetic sheet is usually used on road registered cars to allow easy removal, reuse of numbers, & avoiding damage to paintwork.

I've been using boat registration numbering stickers which you can buy from BCF for $3 a pair. They are a little smaller than the CAMS regs specify, but I've not had an issue as yet.

CAMS specify 230 mm high. CSCA supp regs specify not less than 28 cm.
MG Newcastle sell them on the day for $2 each. I will buy them on the day for $8 total.

28cm is obviously a misprint. Should be 23

Maybe not a misprint!
Just checked all my race no's, old & new, bought from race shops, & they are 270-280 high.
But no one cares anyway. Have seen plenty of people modify a number, or add a 1 etc with black tape, at supersprints.
At Challenge Bathurst regularity last November, the organisers gave out the no's to all competitors. They were 190 high!

I re-used the numbers from CSCA. Just have to be careful removing them. Probably one reguse would be the limit.
