Mx5 nb8b shudders and stalls

Postby 1996kc » Tue Mar 14, 2017 10:20 am

Hey guys, my nb8b (2002 model) has recently been playing up.

It would shudder and stall when started however when I took it to the mechanic to inspect (note that it was stalling throughout my 10minute drive to the store when put into neutral), it worked fine again. Before he went for a drive he gave it a few revs and came back 2mins after a test drive saying it was all fine.

Sorry if this was a repost but I can't find this problems specifically for my situation. Im guessing the revs had something to do with it fixing so anyone have any idea what was wrong? Thanks in advance

Do the revs drop at idle or just cut out.
Never put the top up unless the storm has a name.

More of a cut out. It shakes at 1k rmp then cuts out

Just take it to a mechanic who wants the work, it will be something simple. You will need to leave it with him.

From the information provided, it could be one or more of a number of things. As it's a 2002 NB8B it may have an OBDII port which can be scanned with the correct tool for an error/fault code/s stored in the ECU/PCM. If it's just before OBDII, then it will have an OBDI port, which can also be checked for an error/fault code/s: http://www.mx5diy.com/2015/04/retrievin ... r-mx5.html

Thanks for the response. I had a feeling it was too vague to even start guessing the issue. I just cleaned the MAf, Throttle body and intake hopefully it fixes the issue. The mechanic said I can take it back anytime it plays up again so should be sweet for now.

No problem guessing, but the list could be a long.
NB8B usual suspects causing various issues are:
Spark plug leads/coil on plug setup;
Cam position sensor;
Crank position sensor;
EGI main relay;
Fuel tank electrical connector;
Fuel pump; &
ECU (if water gets into passenger side floor).
Would be worthwhile resetting/clearing ECU error/fault codes so if it does it again you've got something to check against - just disconnect the battery & pump the brake pedal a few times.
If your NB8B is OBDI (ie not OBDII) this will help if you later pursue error/fault codes:

My N15 Pulsar SSS would cut out when I was about to come to a stop. That was due to a dirty IACV and due to the placement of it, no one ever cleans them.
