Last winton test and tune was $150. But for that i could have had 6 20min runs, about 12 to 15 laps per run. But you have to pick your days, some are real busy some are quiet. Most of the show ponies break something and head home after the second run. By lunch its just serious people.

I'm just re-embarking on this, haven't done a track day since 1977.
I will keep track of all costs to run my NB8a in class 1 and supersprint type 1.
This should be the cheapest level but i expect the entry fee to be a small proportion of the total.

depends on how serious you are I suppose

I've been running an NA for a couple of years now and after the initial setup outlay it's really only been regular fluid/filter changes. I think i've spent more on coffees and lunch at the tracks than on maintenance... touch-wood nothing has broken or fallen off :D Tyres (AD08R) are still fine, pads are still fine - but that's probably more a sign of my lack of speed than anything else

similar boat to you - stopped in the mid 80's and only just got back into it the last couple of years. Not looking to break records - just having fun before they wheel me away one day!

Don't do it!!! I'd hate to add up how much I have spent running 114 sprint events over the last 15 years.
Better not to know.. :D

I used to meticulously track my costs when I had the NA6. Over five years, I averaged around $8000-$9000pa for absolutely everything: track entry fees, tyres, fuel, rego, insurance, parts, servicing, etc

eg. viewtopic.php?style=3&p=708517#p708517
Guran wrote:The cost of my MX-5 motorsport in 2012 can be broken down like this:
$3615 track costs (entry fees, dorian hire, accommodation, licence)
$1912 tyres (4x R888 and 4x Star Spec)
$1827 fluids (mostly fuel, but also oil, brake fluid, etc)
$800 operating costs (rego, CTP, third party property)
$391 parts (brake pads, 4x daisy wheels, oil filters, gaffer tape, etc)
$126 equipment (new pair of gloves)
Total $8670

... covers 20 days at the track, at an average of $434 per day. It adds up, but very cheap in the scheme of things, considering that it covers absolutely everything.

Or are us Victorians just getting reamed because my rego alone is $800 :(

Our MX-5 is a day daily driver so rego and insurance is not associated with motorsport.
I will record everything that is directly related to motorsport in 2 categories, capital costs and running costs.
Capital costs will include:
Roll bar
Fire extinguisher
Seat
Harness
Helmet
Protective clothing
Tyres
Brake pads
Anything I haven't thought of?

As these things wear out their replacement will go into running costs

Running costs:
Event entry fees
Annual club membership
Annual CAMS licence
Replacement tyres
Replacement brake pads
Replacement rotors
Replacement oil and filters
Replacement engine parts
Fuel used at events + to and from
Anything else I haven't thought of?

Motorsport is expensive.
Probably the least expensive way into it is to get a 15+ yo sports car for less than $10k, use as your daily drive, drive it to the track and run in the 'standard' class.
An old MX-5 is "ready to race" requiring practically nothing to get started and relatively cheap to maintain.
Ours cost less than $7k, 18yo, 160,000km. It is my wife's daily drive. I am replacing all fluids, coolant hoses, suspension bushes, brake pads, cam belt and water pump.
All of that I would do as daily drive anyway. It is ready for Wakefield track days. For Eastern Creek I need a $40 fire extinguisher that's a good idea for a daily drive too.

It's gone up a bit since 2012. Latest on my now departed 10AE would have been $304 rego and $609 CTP for 12 months. Vehicle age is a factor too. My NC rego is $300 and $415 CTP.

I suspect an even cheaper option is to buy a race car and tow it to the track. No rego or insurance costs. But you need a trailer, suitable towing vehicle, space to store it, and can't drive it on the road between track days.

Sorry completely off topic but I have to clear this up.

Beavis. Having recently bought a car from Victoria and taking it to NSW I have read a bit about your registration compared to ours.
I can assure you, that you are not getting reamed as we are worse off, read on below as our system is no where near as simple as yours.

In VIC your Vehicle registration is all combined in the one fee. You have that TAC fee in your rego which is like our green slip. Don't confuse a NSW CTP green slip with insurance such as third party or comprehensive, nothing to do with it, that's extra on top again just like it is for you.
Plus you have 3 set fees depending on where you live ranging between $675 and $787.
Do you have to do

In NSW to register a car we have 2 or 3 separate fees to be paid at separate organisations .
Registration, CTP (Compulsory third party insurance) aka greenslip and a safety check aka pink slip if the car is over 5 years old. Same as your road worthiness check.
The prices vary as I will explain below.

In NSW you have to pay your registration fee to the RMS which is based on an annual fee of $64, plus tax depending on weight of vehicle for an MX-5 (976kg to 1154kg) that is $240. This gives you Brians fee of $304. You do this last by the way as you need a valid green slip and pink slip if required before you can pay your registration fee.

A pink slip here is another $40 if the car is over 5 years old. You get to waste an hour of your life for an authorised safety check mechanic to "check" your cars safety. Most mechanics, tyre place etc do them in NSW. The aim is to keep unsafe vehicles off the road, but it doesn't work because it is always who you know. Plenty of crap cars on our roads that you wonder how they got registered.

Greenslips are the messy bit. They are provided by 5 or 6 insurance companies (hence the messy bit) and cover essentially what your TAC fee is supposed to do.
Price varies according to age, where you live, driving record, claims history, vehicles use, private business etc.
So it is hard to give an exact price but to keep it simple you end up in 4 common brackets.
Brian has fallen into the cheapest bracket at $450 to $500 which generally means you don't live in Sydney, they like you, your car and other insurance polices.
The next bracket as about $600 to $650. This is about the best you will get in the Sydney area. You need every box ticked to get this.
The next bracket is about $770-$820. Generally you will fall into this if you meet everything bar having full comprehensive insurance or age of car.
Then where I sit at $880 to $900. No I haven't done anything wrong, I get hammered on my age and lack of full comprehensive insurance.
They seem to keep increasing the age to fall down from that worst bracket. It is now 28-30 depending on the car. It used to be 25 a few years back and was 27 just 2 years back. I'm chasing a moving target.
By the way the vehicle has no effect on the greenslip price from quotes I have done for various cars I have thought of buying. I pay the same for my Diesel Peugeot!!! + $53 more for rego as it is heavier.

So for me just to register my MX-5 is $1340 ($304+$104+882+40) vs Brians $759 ($304+$415+$40). If I went to standard plates I would still be at $1236.
I wish we had your system here as I know I would be at $787.40 and wouldn't have to stuff around checking prices every year for the green slip. Although I would only go with NRMA or GIO anyway.

Sure Brians is a bit cheaper than yours but if he lived in an equivalent area in Vic he would probably fall into either the Outer metropolitan (Medium risk zone)
$735.70 or Rural (Low risk zone) $675.20. So bugger all difference there.
If he was in Sydney it would be more like $950.

Insurance such as Third party, comprehensive etc than goes on top of all these fees just like it would for you as well.

Great post, but I should point out that Pink slip and RWC certificates are different. In Vic, you only need to get a RWC when a car is bought/sold. So you can own a car for 30 years and never service it, and that's fine in Victoria. No brake pads left? Also fine to keep driving.
RWC checks can be pricey (usually $180 just for the inspection) and every time the inspector insists on a new windscreen etc. etc. So it usually adds a couple to a few hundred dollars to the cost of selling a car.
Only licensed places can perform a RWC check and the punishment for letting your mates slip through the cracks is severe.

I thought that was the case for a Road Worthy Certificate.
The VIC roads website is a bit confusing as it said it was required when Re-Registering a used car.
So I guess that means your Rego has lapsed, past a 3 month grace period or similar and you want to register it again?
Just to confirm if you register your car every year in Victoria you just pay your registration fee and you don't need a check right? Or is there a lesser cheaper check?

Punishment is supposed to be severe here as well. Makes you wonder though when you see some of the cars out there.

I guess our equivalent to the Victoria Road worthy certificate check would be the Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Scheme (AUVIS) inspection AKA Blue Slip or the PITS. Only costs $60 though.
It is for unregistered, written off or interstate vehicles.
It goes into more detail than a regular yearly pink slip. It is supposed to be taken more seriously which mine definitely was.

I had to do this for the Peugeot I brought back to Sydney from Melbourne. An all legitimate 1 owner car from a Peugeot dealer but I had issues due to it being a rare limited edition model. I had to go though 3 inspections stations before the 3rd guy did a manual blue slip form as he was the only one that didn't treat me like some sort of criminal. The online system through the RMS did not link the ADR approval number to the model which is why the other guys would not do it at all. Honestly I reckon they were just to lazy to fill in the 4 page manual form. I also learnt that they are supposed to call the RMS when they have issues like this from the top guys in the RMS registration section. The RMS here eventually got back to me to confirm the error was in there system as the model only existed in there system under 2008 complied cars and not 2009 like mine is. Peugeot supplies tis to them though so somewhere it got stuffed up. All fixed in the end but still a hassle.

Yes, no yearly inspection here. Only need a rwc if you need to reregister after letting it expire by more than three months. So, if you pay your rego on time you'll only ever need one rwc (unless you get a major defect notice).
