Oil filter Help

The steel casing is only thin.

Normally with the screw driver method you thump the end with a hammer, but if you have enough room to swing.your arm you could fairly easily get through the side with a good stab.

The case of an oil filter is about the same strength as a tin of beans, so not exactly armour plate.

What is that tool, it says page not found..?

I used something similar to griplock pliers with longer handle to get a proper grip and loosen from under the car. Munting the filter would be cleaner than puncturing it, right?

Mx5 mania have the similar tool. Once you fit a filter correctly you dont need it but it makes removal from the top so much easier due to it extending away from the engine block further.

You can get them at Supercheap/Autobarn/Repco. Just measure (in millimetres) across the flutes/flats of the filter and count the number of flats and that is the size you need. I think 65/67 mm 14 flute suits the BP engine filter.

size is obviously important if different branded filters vary but they probably do not. Bear in mind that if you get the adjustable leg type which say fits small fitlers from X to Ymm then it may be suitable for other vehicles. I have a variety of filter removers and surprisingly a belt is often the easiest- some removers use this principle i.e. a flexible strip but they come with a lever which is useless for an MX-5. The MX-5 is not the only vehicle with a filter hard to access. The MX5 is a bit of nuisance in being in a constricted area and not being able to get a good grip.

Most filters are the same regardless of brand, it's only really the ones with nuts welded on the end that differ, and they don't need a remover due to he nut.

As far as the removers go, I've found them all useless on an mx5.
Either he removing tool itself simply won't fit in the space available, or if it does there's no room to actually use a spanner on it.

The cup style ones work best if you're absolutely stuck.
Reaching in from the wheel arch is the best option, from there I can at least get half a hand hold.
From above I can only get the tip of my index finger and thumb on the filter.

The universal Aeroflow remote oil filter kit I fitted to the NB was one of the best mods I've done, no doubt about that. Easy oil changes and no more bleeding hands and forearms! The Aeroflow kit works well and wasn't stupid expensive off Ebay or imported from the USA. I did get the local Pirtech guy to fit the hose ends to the lengths I measured up. It cost a few bucks extra over the kit cost, but I didn't want to stuff up the only "difficult" part of the job. It took an expert only 30 minutes to do a leak free job. Fitting it all in place took a bit of time, but I now laugh every oil change.
