From my count, virtually all of the criticisms made of the RF apply equally to the soft top; ride (body roll), clutch and gearbox, 118kw 2L engine, scuttle shake/NVH etc. Yet in the ND ST reviews, those all feature as defining characteristics, points of difference if you will, not as weak points. This begs the question, what was the author's view of the ND ST? I wouldn't be surprised if their view was equally dim of the ND ST, which marks a strong contrast with the wider automotive press...

So is this author objective? I think the concluding remarks are the most telling; the author appeals to the idea that the ST's open-air experience is materially superior and is a legitimate reason to pick the ND ST over a BRZ, despite this not factoring into their review at all. This is far from a coherent logical argument and smacks of a last ditch attempt to justify a conclusion that isn't supported by reasoning.

ND 1577 (2016) has sold better than all previous MX-5 generations in their first full calendar year: NA 1446 (1990), NB 1310 (1998), NC 1468 (2006). The arrival of the RF should boost sales into 2017 too.

Guran may have more accurate numbers, but following is approx (due to totaling by year, ie some NA, NB & NC sold in 1998, 2005 & 2015 respectively):
1989-1997 NA=4816
1998-2004 NB=6347
2005-2014 NC=5751
2015-end Jan 2017 ND=2609
NA breakdown, again approx as some NA8 sold in 1993:
1989-1993 NA6=3768
1994-1997 NA8=1048
