My 63.0 was on the good tyres, but I only got one session to get up to speed before the gearbox problem. As it turns out it was just 2 of the 3 bolts that connect the shifter to the turret coming loose, tightened them after I got home and it's all sorted. Could've done it at the track and had another session or two if I hadn't assumed the worst. Fairly happy with the times on the archives atr-k sports though, 64.8s and cooking them on the third lap of sessions makes it hard to improve but overall they were very good.

MX5CQ-TRACK DAY 6 FEB 17

Postby MINX » Mon Feb 06, 2017 10:07 pm

Good day as per usual
The new driver orientation delayed the start a bit so I think group 3/4 had to be merged for their fourth run. Need to make sure we get started on time next time.
The air and track temps were intimidating but I managed to get near enough to my pb despite this.
Maybe my NT01s are getting slicker.(28psi hot)
BCs set at 15 from hard, front and rear. Car was very neutral, easy to steer and fast. Maxed at 192( rev limiter in 5th, or using 6th made no dif)
Picked up some speed with better line under 'the bridge' hitting 172 on approach to hungry, few Ks higher than previously.

It looks to me like we have more cars than ever in the under 66 range
Ps the 111 Corolla didn't have a transponder, and was doing 65s, so I don't know how it came to end up 4th ?

On your first lap out it was pretty obvious there was GOING TO BE A PROBLEM!

Thanks to QR staff, Adam's prep work and Grant stepping up on the day.

I had a reasonable day - finished with a 66.4114 so about 9 tenths down on last September which I'll put down to heat. Car ran fine, but as usual took a couple of sessions to get into the groove and had a good clean run in the fourth for times all within a 66.4 - 70.1 range, so was a bit put out when the combined Group 3 & 4 session finished a couple of minutes after 4 pm and that was the end of proceedings. There was some talk about the newbie demonstration lap being later than anticipated and a few fairly minor incidents through the course of the afternoon but I was a little surprised we didn't get a combined group session to finish.

All the visitors were made welcome and there was certainly an interesting selection of machinery on display, including a mid-90's Levin (that replaced a 3.0 litre V6 engined MR2), an R33 GT-R, an R33 Skyline running a carbie fed small block Chev 305 motor from a boat (owner turned up previously in a violently coloured Falcon ute), Audis in S3 and TT RS form, a Boxster (a regular), an E30 BMW 3 series, an 86 and an RX-8.

Good to get out there again. A breeze did a little to alleviate the heat, but in the car it was pretty unrelenting. I will confess to running the AC from starting the car ahead of the session and only turning it off on the approach to Hungry on the warm up, plus immediately turning it on again after the passing the chequered flag and negotiating the Kink.

I must be a glutton for punishment as I'm heading down to QR for the Street Sprints on Wednesday.

Good to see that NT01's still work when they turn into slicks. 8)

Was surprised where I was placed in the final results.

I need to work on the entry to the main straight. MattR the data shows that I was lifting off through the kink despite the fact that I said I was not :(

Back straight, it was either redline in 4th or short change into 5th and loose some acceleration, I did not find the right place to do this change. Trackphotos on a few laps I was getting around 110 on the apex at hungry, I think 118 is pushing the limit of the 205 AD08R's...

Minx good to chat, only about 4kmh under your main straight speed (and approach to hungry), hence why I need to work on the entry and the right gear for the back section. With enough seat time at Lakeside (and correct muffler) I think I can find 2 seconds on the AD08R's.

I think I have found my physiological trigger, for the first 2 sessions I used ear plugs whilst wearing the helmet, last 2 no ear plugs and I was slower...

I've overlaid the racechrono data on my quickest lap run on the Achilles ATR-K Sports, haven't bothered with the twin grooves since there was so much room left in them before I broke the car. Got to say, the Achilles did surprisingly well. Given more practice on them and favourable weather conditions, I'd say they could break into the 63s, which isn't bad for road tyre compound and $600/set fitted. They did get a bit loose on the greasy track, especially at Hungry where it took a little twitching to control a few small slides, but overall they communicate very well and are easily controllable on the edge of grip.

Hey all, many thanks from the newbies - Jordan and I had a great day out. The MX5 pit vibe is second to none, everyone was super friendly and helpful. Ross gave us a good starting pressure for tyres, Kim gave us some alignment and ducting tips, our heads were filled to overflowing with info. Jordan went from a 1:20 down to a 1:08 (not bad for the first time ever of turning a wheel in anger), and I went from 1:14 to a 1:06. Drove home a straight car, so I guess we can call that a win? Car got a bit hot, but not too bad considering it had two drivers. Looking forward to winter though.
Needless to say we are completely addicted now and can't wait for the next day. Thanks heaps for all your encouragement folks Brad.

Didn't realise the fourth session for Group 1 went for seven laps - guess my cooling and brakes are in good shape!
