Not that Dann's post needs defending In any way but engineering and tune can go over 2k no matter where you go and that hasn't included any hardware.

Yes, it is possible by using SE turbo parts like I did. A complete SE turbo kit sells for way less than $500 ( I have bought 3, and the average price was about $250 ea)
ECU is the big cost at $1000, but it is possible to do the lot for $2000. I already had the ECU, and mine cost me $1000 complete, tuned and installed including the new intercooler and bits.. Plus another $250 to upgrade the cooling system to suit track work.

I appear to be obsessed with engineering.
Sure you can still turbo for 2k if you do a lot your self with stock or used parts.
I have an NA6 so was unable to use an SE manifold.
Used manifold, turbo and home made dump pipe around 500. Rx8 injectors 100.
Used MS2 500ish.
New intercooler, piping, clamps etc and paying a welder arpund 350.
Exhaust purchased used 2.5 from a forum member for over 200 but has press bends and needs modding to suit my car.
That's almost 1700 and the car still needs a tune.
You then need a clutch that doesn't slip and in my case bigger brakes.

Re: How to turbo your NA for $2000.
I thought it would be fitting to return to this thread because this is where my turbo journey started. I was one of the early ones to get the kit fitted back in 2013. From the start, on top of the base package, we added the bigger injectors, cooling re-route, inconel studs, locking hardware and catch can because the car was going to be doing a lot of track time. At that time I had a 2.25"cat back and decided to leave it be. It left Dann to get a tune in Sydney with around 135kw and I have been doing about 10 trackdays a year since. Despite being a 'budget' build the car just kept on going. No exhaust leaks, no engine problems...it just goes and goes all day then I drive it home.
I've just gone back to Dann, 3 years later, to finish the job with a 3 inch full exhaust and NitroDann tune. The new tune bumped boost up to 14psi and we got 170kw Exhaust note is aggressive under full throttle but perfectly fine for street driving. In fact, the tune is now more driver friendly than ever despite the extra 40kw of power, especially now that we have the TPS working. You would never know it had that much power if you were just putting along.
My Wakefield Park pb is 1'10 and looking forward to having all that extra power, especially at the top end! Will let you know in November how it goes!

I'm up for the $2k challenge if its still going
got cash ready to go Dann
don't need epic amounts of boost or power, just an improvement!

170kw in a na6. Nice!
Anything you would do differently if you had to do it again?
I ask as I hope to have mine sorted January /February.
Cheers!

Re: How to turbo your NA for $2000.
If you get Dann to build it I would just get him to tune it and be done with it. Put on all the things you think you might want, it just saves the hassle later. He didnt have a dyno at the time so I used someone in Sydney who wasn't familiar with MS and that was a bit of a run around.

Re: How to turbo your NA for $2000.
Yes he's still around, but he now charges more consistently with his high standard of work i.e. still good value but not backyard warrior prices. More than a few of us have had our cars turbocharged by Dann, I had mine done last year. I'm not going to discuss how much it all cost as I'm sure Dann's prices have changed since then but my reasonably basic turbo set up with 90% used parts was a lot more than $2k.

Re: How to turbo your NA for $2000.
Haven't thought I wanted to turbocharge my new NA but have unexpectedly been offered (for free) a turbo and blow off vale from an EVO8. Its a TD05 I believe. I'll read through this thread tonight but is this good turbo for an NA where I am not one seeking a whole lot of power anyway?

Re: How to turbo your NA for $2000.
Thread started in nearly 4 years ago (7 July 2013), so pretty much inevitable these days that some cost increases will have occurred, in addition to what smy0003 points out.
