ND Transmission - big clunk in reverse
Hi guys,
Just seeing if anyone else has experienced this issue when during a cold start, putting the car in reverse and hearing a big clunk?
It almost feels like the car feels stuck when you first start to reverse, but then runs completely fine after the big clunk. Anyone know what the sound might be?
But I have found that if I drive forwards first before putting it in reverse I don't get that problem.
Cheers

Many cars seem to benefit from being put into a forward gear before reversing. I always select any forward gear, you don't have to move. Then select R.

New car that is not right. Back to dealer for check and rectification.

Welcome Gypsy-Danger,
I think everyone has assumed you have a manual, but I get this sometimes in Autos that I drive. Do you have the auto?
Morlock is right, if you think it is abnormal go and see your dealer.

I have a manual and have had the car for about 4 months now.
Might go get it checked with the dealer just in case

Rear brake discs rusted overnight from damp conditions?

I think there has been an issue with the rear discs clunking that has been mentioned on Miatanet, maybe that is it?I have no drama with mine.

Re: ND Transmission - big clunk in reverse
Many cars do that. It's usually the surface rust on the rotors which causes the pads to stick to them a bit. When you set of in reverese the pads move with the rotors for a millimeter or so until they reach the end of their free play and then let go of the rotor with a clunk.

The same happens to me (ND) after washing the car, putting it away and not driving for a week or so. Rust on disc's like mentioned above.

Re: ND Transmission - big clunk in reverse
Okay cool, I feel a little more relieved knowing that other people have experienced something like this too.
Rust on the rear could be the cause, might keep an eye on the conditions in the morning as I do keep it under a carport.
Thanks for the help guys

Re: ND Transmission - big clunk in reverse
There is an issue with rear brakes rattling as well that is covered by a Mazda Service Information.REF No.E118/15A and they replace the rear brake caliper support and the rear pads(Worldwide).May be completely unrelated to your issue but worth knowing.

Re: ND Transmission - big clunk in reverse
It still needs a diagnosis. I would not have thought this should be happening on a new car.
