Look forward to seeing you on the track. When do you think you will be able to test it in anger?

I pick my AD08R's up this week then off to QR to see what the new tune feels like.

Just reading this. Glad you've had luck with hps. Dont bother with cmr if they're not familiar with the car they didn't want to know me. I'm sure they're ok with the usual jap stuff. Car looks good and 130 isn't shabby. Sucks we can't go back and get a refund from crappy tuners hey!

Few little updates, second part of the tune was done and dusted, earlier i stated the car originally made 112 or something from Godzilla Motorsport (if you're reading this dont go there, they're bad..to say the least), and so I had taken it to Horsepower Solutions to find a solution to my horsepower problem and i MISTAKENLY stated it made 130hp, i was WRONG he meant its got the potential to make around that, with the excitement i had confused myself, I apologise. :D

That day we ran the Godzilla tune on his dyno and got 110, after seeing to the between customers he got it to just under 120hp without fixing the afm issue, but i took it back to him a few weeks back and left it with him for a day and we got it to 130hp at the wheels and it just drives SO much nicer, im noticing the power all through the rev range compared to how it was before I took it to Justin at Horsepower Solutions! Another thing I should note, I was having huge issues where i would decelerate and the would just stall out whilst the clutch was in, and this was unsafe in traffic and so damn annoying, the final tune also fixed this issue.

Break Down of Tune Results:
Godzilla Motorsport (Mark): 110bhp (ran poor and stalled out a lot) ...had the car for 2 weeks
Horsepower Solutions (Justin): 118-119bhp (spent about 1 hour tops on the car in between customers)
Horsepower Solutions (Justin): 130bhp (took one working day, maybe less)

So all that stuff is done and I am now much happier with it, added to that I bought a Beatrush Stainless Steel undertray (pics will be up later), It's a great product which is a pretty replacement for the plastic one I had which was shredded. In addition to the tune I have played around with my intake moving the pod filter to the furthermost part of the Hot side of the engine bay, now that the AFM has been removed it allows much more room. The leaking Power Steering rack is also now converted to a Depowered Rack, a little different to get used to but i much prefer the feeling especially when you need to fight back a little during spirited cornering.

Next up - Ford Capri style cam cover to expose the Cam Gears, and new gauge cluster to go in. Will try and upload pics in the very near future.

Good afternoon all,

My last post ended with me saying something about gauges and a cam cover in the near future, so I guess this is near enough. Since the last post in December a bit had gone on for good and bad. Not too sure where to start, I will try and keep this in Chronological order.

Firstly, scored this piece of coolness from Japan, its a Beatrush undertray to replace the shitty plastic one I had, as far as installation goes it goes on quite well, the kit had everything you need to install and a second pair of hands helps but its easy enough to do solo, even the Japanese instructions had images which made it easy to follow.

The main reason I wanted this is after the head work I had done, the engine is now an interference engine so I want to help add cooling and flow in the engine bay, ensuring I dont overheat too much and warp the head. According fro what I've read and heard, this panel does just that, plus its a nice change from the manky plastic one I had.
Image

Next up, now that Horsepower Solutions retuned the car and actually removed the AFM, i extended the air intake into the far corner of the bay instead of where it sat (close to the headers). Quick run to Autobarn for piping and silicone, some cutting and I ended up with this:
Image

As you can see its STARTING to look a little more tidier, and as I mentioned in an earlier post I wanted to hunt down an Capri/323 cam cover, which has the Cam gears exposed...so I did just that:
Image

Now I found out these are being hunted by mx5 owners world wide as they give a nice look to the engine bay, also note that many people also cut their stock cam cover, that also looks good but I chose to go for this one, picked it up for about $50 which im ok with, only issue is the previous owner had bolted it down too hard or something and cracked it, so im in the process of getting it fixed. See below
Image
Image

Next up is the new Gauge Cluster, this one will the my 3rd in the car, not sure if any of you have done this or not, its a slight pain to do in summer, at night, after a few drinks but hey the end result is farking worth it (excuse my language) I love custom gauge clusters!
Image

Removing all the panels necessary and the wheel is easy enough...its the connections at the back of the cluster itself which are/were a pain, but I got through it after a few more drinks.
Image
Image

And thats the end result, this was my old one
Image
Image

Also this happened rushing to work one morning in between all the above, basically went round a corner not gauging the corner of the pavement and just scraped it, I was pretty pissed off all day but found a mobile wheel repairman who came to my work and fixed it back to normal in about 20 minutes, so i was happy again.
Image

So about the day before I left to go to Melbourne for the MX5 Fan Fest event, I go to turn on the car and hear all this knocking noise, I freaked out and turned it off to find my Alternator Belt had flipped. I am not 110% sure as to why as everything seemed fine, all pulleys were aligned, all bolts tight and the belt itself wasnt that old at all, i DID see some feathering of the top layer material so that may have done it, but im keeping close watch to see if the new one acts the same.
Image

Now to Melbourne about two weeks back: Myself and many others from Queensland flew down for the weekend of the Mazda MX5 Fan Fest in Melbourne at Sandown Raceway, had a great time catching up with everyone, watching Mark (AKA Magpie) on the track, signing the 1,000,000th MX5, seeing Mad Mike and (with the aid of Luke AKA Rolley) trespassing and getting an up close look at the cars that raced out on the track and also getting an up close look at the ND cup cars. Whilst also in Melbourne I drank a lot, ate a lot, got caught up a street away from Bourke Street where the maniac killed 5 people and also got lost and stumbled upon classic car heaven - Dutton Garage. I didnt get that many pictures at the Fan Fest but im sure you can find others surfacing over time.

Dutton Garage:

Could have gotten many more photos in there but I was distracted talking to the very helpful salesperson who showed me around and told me some back stories of these amazing vehicles.

On my way out whilst waiting for my Uber to take me to the nearest pub I saw this track-spec ferrari being loaded into a trailer owned by Maranello Motorsports, talked with the owner of the team for 5-10 minutes and he was cool.
Image

And to end the update (sorry it was so big) here is my car on Australia Day:
Image
Wouldnt start due to the Fuel Pump dying, towed to a local mechanic to which we found the wiring to the fuel pump shorted out. That sucked but these things happen hey. Now we're all up to date, car is running well and I'll post up the updated of the Cam Cover when I get around to getting it repaired and perhaps painted.

Peace.

Sorry just re-aquinting myself with your car
Heads port & polished
256 cams
halteck ECU
AFM removed eventually

Did you increase the CR?
Anything else I've missed?
Was there a power run with the new engine & stock ECU?

130 HP is pretty good . Just under that 100 killer wasp magic mark.

Just think if you were still on your p's you wouldn't be allowed to drive that car now.

Dutton Garage I will have to visit, thanks for the teaser...

Like the way 8k RPM is at 12 o'clock on the gauge face. May not on public roads be a good idea to have both needles at 12 o'clock simultaneously :)

Thanks for stopping in and saying Hi at fan fest.

Hey Stan,

I originally wanted to use an old Haltech i had but a few tuners wouldn't touch it so I bit the bullet and went for a brand new Link G4+ ecu that sits inside the stock ecu housing which is neat, I wanted to, but never got the chance to do a stock power run, only with the new ecu and head work.

Mods that were done consisted off: Polished & Ported Head (also shaved back 40 thou), HKS 256 cams, Toda adjustable cam gears, coolant re route. Theres a few other things done in the past to aid these mods such as lightweight flywheel, heavy duty clutch and the 4:1 lsd too.

Yeah im quite comfortable with 130bhp as my goal was just to add a bit more kick to it, i thought you would be able to drive is on P plates? mind you im unsure of the recent updates on those rules.

Thanks for getting Luke and myself those pit passes, it added a lot more to the day!

But yes if you get the chance its a must do, located in Richmond so not too far from the city, I just stumbled in there, then freaked out that I wouldn't be able to look around unless I was buying/selling a car, but they were really hospitable in that regard, a salesperson walked around with me for about an hour just talking to me about some of the car's history etc. There is also a little coffee shop in there too and their stock is always changing too. If you look at their website (posted below) you can see their current and previous cars, its a great place & a must see for anyone (plus its free!)

ha ha,
updated rules
any modification which gives the car more than 20% power increase. That's power at the crank
any car which has more than 130kw per tonne at crank

that's for NSW.

My son is going for his P's in a few weeks. He can do the test in a manual. But then I'll have to stop him from Driving it.

essentially both our cars have the same mods.
1.8 drive line torsen
CR increase
Port match & polish
Cams Mine are 272 10mm lift slightly more aggressive
exhaust
Enlarged CAI.

I didn't do the coolant re-rout.

so theoretically mine should have somewhere around 110-120 hp without the ECU.
but going from 110 to 130 must have been sweet

I have also done the exhaust and CAI, although id imagine you might get a bit more power due to the larger cams (but i have stickers all over my hardtop adding an easy 30-40kw @ 5kw per sticker).
Although a Lakeside track meet is now in order! :D
