Had a catch up with the big man Jim Berry (Race Clutch) today, He got to personally test out his "frankenstien" clutch on the Stanthorpe backroads and show off some of his race lines!!! He was grinning like a Cheshire Cat After playing with the problem child. I gotta say, for a 72yo, he still knows how to drive them corners hard and fast! Great day.

Man the car looks great. Very subtle changes with the badge delete and Advan RZs, but very effective.
I bet it's not so subtle to drive...

Cheers mate- I'm looking to get rid of most of the badges on the back too- my mate Joe the panel beater who redone the front end quoted $700 to finish the the rest, I will take up on it soon enough (unless I can get it over to billybunters and offer to clean bird cages for a sprayjob )
I have to say with regard to the not so subtle drive, It does give me pride to say, with someone like Jim Berry, who over a long life of the pleasure of working in with some of the icons of the Australian marquee pro race teams and drivers, as well as having quality track time himself, say of the problem child is, and I quote, "f***!!!! this thing is a weapon" ........mate today that put a big smile on my face to have someone like him be impressesd
Jim has done heaps of work for Brian Ferrabee, And I got to check out some of the work he's putting together for Brian and several others with a crash course in the value of a heavy flywheel in a high powered boosted setup- here's hoping for a bit of a deep and meaningful with both Brian Facilitated by Jim sometime soon

I hopped in the Problem Child the other morning and when I turned on the ignition, the fuel pump was silent. After the inevitable getting the s**** and kicking the nearest wall with thoughts of a deatschwerks fuel pump fail. I called up Dr Daz- after taking out the pump assembly we realised that the bottom half of the relay plug was corroded a beaut due to the now regular use of e85. Now 1st thought was to cough up $$$ to get an oem replacement- but thinking that if an oem relay corroded once, its a fair bet to say it would happen again. Daz took the assembly back to his workshop and cut away at some of the plastic shrouding and used a zinc solder to mesh the connection together. A solid soldering that can (hopefully) repel the corrosion! While we had the assembly out, we seen a bit of corrosion forming on the assembly bracing too. I got some vp racing M2 upper cylinder lube that I hope will avert any future corrosion issues (fingers crossed, and that goop makes the Problem Childs bum pipe smell real purty too!). Always learning something new about the joys of e85 everyday!!

Loved the 80's too, kept my 1982 Mitsubishi JA Starion, bought in 1989, for over 20 years I loved it so much - best seats I've ever sat in and a great GT car.
The motoring press loved the Starion (JA and JB, NOT the JD since pollution control capped its power too much) but the public thought it cost too much for a Japanese car and bought the smaller 1.8L front-wheel drive Cordia instead.
If I had the money, garage space and "The Staz" hadn't suffered cancer (aka rust), I would have kept it, the car got a lot of compliments, younger guys had no idea what it was and older guys would check it out reminiscing about when they owned one.

I like how special cars bring complete strangers together chatting easily like that, same for custom bikes - I'm yet to meet a bikie who was annoyed at me admiring the details of his bike and they're usually happy to tell you what's been done to it.

HaHa- it took a big shoe horn and a grease gun from Jims wokshop, but we managed to fit him it!!
As for the Starion, mate that was one of my top favs of the 80's- I can't recall anyone not loving them, great looks, great power. Its a real shame they discontinued production- such a tough looking weapon!

There were a lot of cool and unique cars that came out in the 80s.

One of my friends had a corolla 2 gp turbo.





I myself had even looked at a few starions but couldn't find any good ones at the time time, so instead bought one of these.





I really liked that they were not square like other cars of the time. Even the instrument cluster was rounded (just like NAs/NBs) which was a rare thing back then.

I loved the original RX7 shape too, it was my "other" choice if I couldn't find a Starion.

You hardly see either of these cars on the road now

I bought a black turbocharged FC RX-7 when I lived in Minnesota - completely wrong car for Minnesota winters, even with winter Blizzak tyres (I had to take off in 2nd).
That experience cured me of wanting a rotary powered car since it was expensive to maintain.
It also cured me of EVER buying another black car since it was impossible to keep clean, even in summer.

You know, thinking back on these types of iconic sub big block cars of the 80's- at the time they polerised by the then big block rev heads of that time period- hats off to the direction of inovation and future course these machines and manufacturers have taken the motor vehicle industry. The saying " theres no substitute for cubic inches doesn't hold much weight anymore since the 80's as an "end argument" statement!! Sure you can put out a ridiculous amount of power out of a massive boosted big block- But let us Look at the reality of it- and at this I quote my wise cousin that had an awsome hp v8 corvette back when......"it goes fast in a straight line- but it can't take a corner!" Personaly, I think its more fun to take a corner, theres more thrill to driving a car through a circuit than just slamming your foot on the gas in a straight line, peddle like all f***, holding a mega Beast together for up to 10 seconds and then hitting the brakes and deploying chutes a few seconds later- when a car and driver become one, there is a multitude of variables that build on an understanding of controlling a vehicle in any condition or circumstance and a skill set is built on. Not bagging the drag racers ( I LOVE a monster machine tearing up the quater mile! As well as the skill it takes to keep nerve enough to drive that line professionally - that is a diffrent flavour to satisfy a taste (I believe these guys are the ones who advance the development of mechanical engineering that filters quality imput to all other aspects of engine development), I feel a car Is built for a purpose that must reflect what the driver finds in satisfaction of what interests the individual in what they want to achieve. Thats why I love the saying "Its built for my satisfaction, not for your approval diversity is what makes the world a more interesting place

I never liked the sigma but having owned a scorpion and liking the starions I suspect that it hauls arse.
All this nostalgia is making me a little sad as the current crop of affordable cars seems bland in comparison to the unique and quirky stuff that we had in the 80s.

I couldnt agree more- the 80's seemed to be a time of innovation- these days , we just seem to build on the success and failure of that time

I thought I got pretty good value for the $9k I paid for it. interior was well ahead of any of the jap cars so it did look quality.

I made one mistake though. I let a mate drive it and he blew the turbo and in those days $1000 to fix it...........after that I never let him drive any of my cars again that was a pretty expensive lesson for me
