Really this sort of thing can happen in any industry, but the fact is I am a mechanic and when I look at a the receipt it is quite obvious that they were a bit creative with their work, I didn't mention they charged 6.5 hours labour, even an apprentice could do the whole job in 2 hours and that's taking it easy....and there is no way genuine original rotors would wear out in 45k
NC Roadie, NC Racey, ND Racey….and a 30AE

Plus several others in the bone yard...

The rotors may have been warped due to riding the brakes and overheating the pads. One one would every know. But yes charging 6.5 hours to do a 2 hours job is creative. That is an extra $540 right there.

Dealers can be hit and miss, but so can mobile or independent mechanics.

There are only 2 people I've found to be 100% reliable. Myself and one long-standing independent mechanic. Everyone else I have tried has been hit and miss, including a few dealerships.

I'm not sure what I'll do when I buy a new car, but i'm sure there are lots of people who face the same dilemma of taking it to the dealership or to a competent independent known quantity without the Mazda computers.

Would the person you drop your car off to still work on it if you weren't giving them money? If not, you're dropping your car off to the wrong person.

Dealers get a good bashing. Some is justified, some isn't. Generally dealers are just like every other mechanic, except they have access to software updates and factory service manuals, and charge about 20 - 100% more.

Learn to do it yourself - noone will put the amount of care and patience into your car as you will. Almost all jobs can be done by the home mechanic or under the guidance of an experienced friendly MX-5 local.
