Re: The Roadster NA Journey Begins

Had a look at data from SMSP GP and it also shows the same 'style'. In my defence a bit over 1G on the AD08R's at T1 is not bad, however sustaining 1.2g through the WHOLE corner would be faster. Whilst I achieved better G's at T2 it is a SLOW corner so again it shows a tendency to being 'safe' (lack of balls).

Is there enough interest in a data analysis topic for people to post methods of data analysis (and its purpose). Anybody that records G forces can replicate this graph.

Combined G = SQRT(x²+y²) this is handy for a quick look as it will never go negative and is simpler to read. You can then use this formula to compare the actual 'grip' with the calculated 'grip' at the desired max G.

Calculate max g for a constant G - þ
X = COS[ARCTAN(y/x)] * þ
Y = SIN[ARCTAN(y/x)] * þ

If using excel then use the formula =COS(ATAN2(x,y))* þ

Example - Lateral g (y) = -1.091 and Acceleration g (x) = -0.109 at a maximum G (þ) = 1.2

Equates to -1.193 (Y) and -0.125 (X) and 85% of available grip at þ

Possibly, but I know who will be the biggest contributor....

Finally got around to installing the fixed mounts for the Sparco Sprints, also swapped the passenger and drivers seats...

The shell again proved very useful for making a template out of aluminium before bending and drilling of the chosen material, 50mm x 8mm steel...

Took a bit of time to get it right, but worth the effort. Next weekend will be making up passenger side template. Happy to loan out to people in Brisbane if they want to do something similar.

Did run into a final fitment issue when moving the seat down from its test position. The lower position pushed the mounts out of position, by backing off the side mounting nuts it was easy to get the seat into position and bolted down. Will need to put some cross bracing in next time. Already have a plan for next time :)

In its current position (needs to be moved back a bit), the front is about 30mm lower than the passenger side.

The passenger side. I never noticed that the passenger seat was not that level, possibly because of the way the seat mounts. However I spend little time in the passenger seat :)

ImageDSCN3649 by Eipeip, on Flickr

The shoulder line of the drivers side is about 20mm lower due to the fact that the rear is 1 hole higher than the front (I like an erect seat).

Was it a weight saving? NO!!! It was about the same... However, the seat can go even lower if I bolt direct to the flat bar mounts! I used 880mm of 50x8mm bar and this is about 2.4kg :(

Passenger Seat
This is the Automotive Plus method of installing a Sparco Sprint into the passenger side. A bracket is bolted to the OEM mount and the seat bolted from the side to this bracket. For the other rail an additional hole is drilled and the seat is bolted in from the bottom.

Hi Magpie,

I am assuming you have an AutomotivePlus Bar - is it the tall version? If it is, can you post this measurement?

Image

The straight edge is laying from the bar to the windscreen top directly above the 'A' and the 'R'. Mine is on Garage Star rails, as low as it can go, and I get 85mm between the top of the seat and the bottom of the straight edge.

Sorry hardtop precludes that measurement, plus have padding on the bar...

A measurement from straight up the back to the hardtop is 110mm to the top of the seat (between the A and R). If the lower mount was used this would become 120mm. If put direct on to the bar I guess it would be about 140mm.

Next weekend I will do some adjustments and then measure with helmet on etc.

Jamie came over today to make some brackets, 5mm steel instead of 8mm that I used. Jamie kindly arrived with sufficient 5mm to make up 2 sets of brackets.

The shell was used to get everything right, especially how far back the seat needs to be due to Jamie being vertically different before a test fit into the blue car. Damm the seat would not fit, then we realised that the eyebolts for my harness and the roll bar prevented the seat going into the first choice.

The eyebolts were removed and Jamie was happy with this position, however a bit further back would be nice. There was still about 50mm the seat could go back and simple trigonometry indicates that this will lower the seat another 7mm. From Jamie's shoulder to the hardtop was 300mm!

Who would have thought, Jamie's mounts and 5mm is lighter than my 8mm ones and mounts... (double the weights to get per seat)

After Jamie left I used the spare set of 5mm bars and mounted my Sparco. A bit lower than previous, however I moved it back about 50mm and it is now spot on for me! Also put the seat at all points as low as possible.

Offending eyebolt. Need to move mine further back so will get an approved mount installed soon and further to the back.

Also have a 'special' mount made for the passenger side, especially for JapNats made out of 1.6mm aluminium and the seat bolted straight to it :) Not safe for a human but meets the rules :)

Why did you use steel for the brackets? I used 5mm x50mm aluminium bar for my seat mounts. Much lighter and still plenty strong enough..

I have some aluminium bar as well, however as pointed out by Jamie the forces on the seat are in shear, not aluminium's strongest attribute. Not sure if the aluminium bar would be questioned by a scuiteneer, would be a pain to see.

I still have to get some proper grade bolts to put into the mounts (and replace the OEM mounting bolts). However no rush on this job. All I can say is it a bitch to install the seat now.

What to do with 12 days and no work.... car projects :)
1. Brake Booster delete
2. Hook up VBox Lite to Haltech CAN
3. Install 8kg rear springs
4. Make car able to meet noise limits at Sandown
5. Finish seat brackets
6. Tidy wiring up (job when dash out for booster delete).

Job 1 - This is a big one and long in the making also seals the cars fate. Will not be able to use manual bias in some events, but... many thanks to Zossy1 for making this possible. This setup has already proved itself, whilst it maybe a little heavier this is balanced out by the fact that brakes can be adjusted on the 'fly'.

Look familiar... test mounted on the shell to get a plan developed to install into the blue car. May have to get some custom braided lines made up to replace the hard lines, makes routing easier.
ImageDSCN3673 by Eipeip, on Flickr

Issues... The pedal box was installed on a stripped out car that did not have the fuse box or harness going through the fire wall. I still have both of these :(

Mock up of where the bottles will be located.
ImageDSCN3678 by Eipeip, on Flickr

What has to be removed from the blue car... Note airbox already removed
ImageDSCN3672 by Eipeip, on Flickr

Must thank Steampunk for the gift of this tool, allows you to turn the handle and get into tight spaces to remove nuts! No need to move the whole ratchet, which can be done as well!
ImageDSCN3668 by Eipeip, on Flickr

Current pedal spacing
ImageDSCN3674 by Eipeip, on Flickr

New setup, a little closer
ImageDSCN3675 by Eipeip, on Flickr

Job 2 - Hook up VBox Lite to Haltech CAN
This was a failure. It would appear that the VBox is acting like a termination device on the CAN. Whilst it does not show any data on the VBox it prevents data going to the IQ3. The IQ3 needs to be the last device on the CAN :(

Will contact VBox support and see if there is a solution, however this was a nice to have.

Those ratchets are a bit cumbersome and heavy for daily use and I hate any ratchet you have to press a button on to release a socket/extension...
BUT
That 1/100 time you really cant reach the bolt or get that 5* swing while wedged against the firewall/suspension they are the most amazing, beautiful creature ever conceived.

Did my normal thing on 25/12, that is make a decision that there is no turning back from. My previous most memorable mod on a 25/12 was to cut the hardtop to install a roof vent.

This time it was to cut down the seat brackets. This was for a few reasons. (1) the existing brackets were damaging the seats and (2) it will only ever be me in the seat and if anybody else wants a drive well enjoy my driving position...

Cutting complete - note to self. Next time engrave/stamp parts with identification to make it easier to get it back together BEFORE doing anything else...

And now they are smaller and LIGHTER (plus identified)

Today was finish off the brackets AND start the strip out for the dash...

Drivers side finished

Also made up the new passenger brackets, 6mm aluminium and bolted direct to the brackets.
