Thanks billy, really appreciate the comments. Sounds like i haven't done too badly then. I'm not going to bother with trying to work the paint any further, it's more than good enough, well at least for now.
All up I spent maybe $200-300 in materials to paint the roof. And I have half a can left to paint the doors. And a collection of new tools. I'm sure a pro shop would have asked much more $$$.

Did you happen to get actual numbers on the weight difference? (Steel is typically about 2.5 times denser than aluminium. So a 10kg steel exhaust could be 4kg in Aluminium.)

I think if any-one went to a paint shop and asked them could they spray the roof and doors for $200 to $300 they would probably say yes they could - BUT it would be with a hose! :lol: so you did well :wink:

like I said I only use acrylic but after I apply the last coat of white I usually run 4 coats of clear coat straight over it too. wait the next day and hit it with Norton 400 or 600 wet/dry light rubbing then use a very mild cutting agent.

Norton is by far the best paper ive use over 20 years that's why good paint shops carry it. not like that other rubbish which splits and cracks up in the rubbing blocks

after that then start on the car :lol: :roll:

better still if any-one is using the wet/dry cutting paper for the first time best you go for 800/1000 grade.

Maybe you shouldn't scrap this straightaway. You did mention noise compliance earlier in the thread. I scrutineered an Alfa at Phillip Island that had a heavily angled tip like yours that could be rotated to face away from the sound monitor at whichever track he was competing on that day. :D

I had that same vibrant muffler from that motiq article. It was super lightweight but I blew all the stuffing out of the exhaust whilst launching at the start of an autotest at a club event. It was raining fiberglass matting down from the sky.

It actually happened at around 4000 rpm where my exhaust is most violent from the cam overlap. The perferated mesh must have been flexing in and out from the exhaust pulses and cracked. On a stock car I think it would be fine although probably too loud.

I feel like hard launches are one of the more heavy-wear moments that a car would experience. Usually I would expect things like driveline that suffer... diff/trans/driveshafts for example. But I guess in your case it shows that other areas suffer too.

For now, a steel exhaust should be good and reliable for me.

Reduced Mass Makes The Car Faster

Sorry it's been a while since the last update... but plenty of stuff has been happenning.
So following from my removal of the boot floor (to make room for the exhaust), I continued the work with the grinder and cut out the remainder of the boot floor, that being the parts either side of the main frame rails in the boot where the battery usually lives on these cars.
In theory I could probably cut the frame rails out also, however, I thought it would be good to keep them for now, at least until the wing mount is worked out.

The other section I removed was the piece where the boot hinges usually bolt to, which lives between the passenger compartment and the boot area.

Not satsfied, I kept going with the grinder and took out the multiple layers of steel that lived above the rear wheel arches. There are about 4 layers of sheet metal here.
Sometimes it took a few passes with the grinder to take a layer off at a time to get the the next layer underneath.
And so many difficult hard to reach spots.

So much grinder dust and steel... and not looking forward to the cleaning that I will need to do.

The car is so much more open now, and the rear so easily accessible from the cabin.

While all external metal is still in place, you can really see how much of an 'airy' feel it has now.
I just wish I could shrink the fuel tank hump down now as it seems like a big lump in the way of what could be a big flat area.... MX-5 ute perhaps?

While I was on a roll, the seat mount hump thing on the drivers side of the car was drilled out and removed as the seat now bolts into the cage.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Not a bad idea :) Maybe one day in the future!

Actually, for the moment I wanna keep a passenger seat available as an option because sometime soon I want to bring the Mrs or my mum in the car and scare the crap outta them :D

What about just a smaller fuel tank in stock (lower) position. I have an 20L FCS fuel cell in my Integra, and a 5L surge tank. Enough for half a day at Wakefield.

Not sure if you got to WTAC this year but it looked like under Suzuki had removed all the floor from about the drivers seat back to make a huge diffuser which came up why above diff height. Wait a sec I might have a photo.

Also any thoughts to increasing the strength of the safety cell around you given the strength and material removed from the rear.

Extra bracing between chassis rails to keep stiffness?
