Weighted Gear Knobs ?

Postby Code4 » Sun Oct 23, 2016 6:23 pm

I've done a search with 3 results.

Anyone use a 5 speed weighted gear knob ? M10 x 1.5
What have you got ?
What does it weigh ?
Are they any good ?

There is a company who acquired all of the technical documentation regarding the mx5 gearbox design, the shifter itself and did a tonne of testing regarding the seating position, feel of the shifter in relation to it etc etc and developed a gearknob which is the perfect weight for the mx5.

That company is called Mazda, and the knob should have come with your car.

Skunk2 if you can find one (no longer made in correct thread afaik) - sorry mine's not for sale

or the BLOX knockoff is just as good.

Weight of both is perfect and improved the feel of gear changes for me.

Skunk is now Blox I believe. I have one of theirs, it looks a lot like Kevs (though mine is stamped for a 6 speed as I have a 6 speed). Its about 450g I if I recall, the weight is great. However I don't love this knob, it sits a bit high - it needs to be counter sunk, and I think I'd prefer a round "pool ball" style shifter. I'm looking at the Moddiction knobs and the Voodoo knobs, though the regular Voodoos are a bit light for my liking and the heavy one is wayyyy to expensive.

Love the Voodoo knob - even have one in my DD SP23.

They do get bloody hot though in the sun, I've burned the shift pattern into my left palm on many occasions :P

One thing I forgot to mention - these can sometimes get a bit hot in direct sun.

My Skunk is 5 speed, my Blox is six speed, but they come in 5 speed.

I hadn't actually noticed much difference in height myself. Now I'm curious and want to put my factory one back in just to see where it sits by comparison

EDIT: ... Lokiel just beat me to the heat thing

Lol Dan you knob.. I started reading and thought never heard of this research....

I've got some round Ball type one on my 6 speed.

I'd really like a factory 6 speed one but can't find one that doesn't look like it's been chewed on or a million dollars.

When I put in the MiataRoadster Short Shifter, my stock knob started transmitting a lot of vibration noise. So much of a buzzing that I even tried to drive with no knob - didn't do that for more than 2 corners. I found my stock knob in the garage the other day, it's not aged well in there!

Kev's Skunk looks to sit much lower than my Blox.

The Moddiction I'd like to get, but I'd want it gloss black, with a shift pattern.

Over on m.net Moddiction have a sponsors thread with their knobs, they show a gloss black, and other colours. Might need to custom order it though.

If you don't care too much about weight, I'd get a Voodoo knob (and one of their hand brake handles too!)

Use the 1993-1995 NA8 Nardi (75g) here, but have tried the NA6 (200g) & NB8A (200g) in place of it - didn't feel as good, but that could be because of height & shape differences to the NA8. Believe there was also a lighter than 200g NA6 one, which was the original, but haven't tried this to see if it feels more like the NA8.

i had a veilside one in my FC RX-7 with an RE-Amemiya short shift and it was awesome, i would say the knob weighed around 400grams. i changed the knob to a D1 carbon light thing and it made a large difference as far as how smooth the change was it just didn't seem to glide through anymore so it went on my WRX that was just a daily at the time.
There is deffinately something to be had there and i am going to go the moddiction Anvil 2 engraved with black numbers on the MX as i tend to pistol grip the shifter when driving casual and the voodoo or moddiction Anvil 1 make this hard. it is also height adjustable. i have gone to order a couple times and they have been out of stock but ill probably order mine in a month or so as i am organising an order with carbon miata at the moment and it is taking 5 funds :P .
hope that helps.

Well, the company is actually called Matsuda Kabushiki-gaisha. They badge their cars with a few different brands, including Mazda, Autozam and Eunos, two of which were used on the Roadster/Miata/MX5.

My Blox 6 speed knob turned up on Friday so went for a run along Booral Road. It feels amazing with the short shifter!
All the extra effort that was introduced with the SS has been removed from the throw. Even getting reverse is easier.
Even the wife likes it.
Feels like the standard shifter again in effort required.

Public Service Announcement: Moddiction's "Black Friday" sale is on, weighted shift knobs are USD$58, down from USD$72.

Sadly, the engraved models aren't in stock. I'm thinking I'll pick up an Anvil myself...

With a shipping cost of USD$133.57, they can keep it
