If I was to repaint my Titanium SE there would be so many other options I would prefer...
- yellow
- green
- probably go for the NA colour, Laguna Blue!

Sure but titanium is probably the best factory colour.

^+1 - not that I think you will, but if you get the painting itch again, there's always Winning Blue & Innocent Blue:

Like Nevyn said, try something different if you've got a painting itch. I'm a fan of blues, Mariner as mentioned, or a Gulf Blue like this?

Not a fan of these "undercoat colours" - some of the Hyundai colours even look putrid to me.

I still wish he'd painted the car lava orange - it's an MSM colour that we didn't get in Australia (and it would look great next to the bold Lotus colour).

today I thought i'd let the daughter take the SE out to a couple of the local panel beater and see what the going rate was for a full re-spray including the boot and door jams

one painter actually asked why you would want to spend that kind of money on an old car too

well they came in pretty close on their quotes so here goes

1. both quoted to do the full re-spray including boot and door jams $10,000

engine bay

painter 1. said he could paint the engine bay while the engine was still in the car for $800 extra

painter 2. told the daughter to do the job properly the motor would have to be pulled so add $2,000 to the quote if this task was to be carried out.

painter 1. actually said this car never came in sunlight silver so I must have originally had the titanium in the first place

never actually got to ask the daughter what this re-spray would involve but I think it would be just rubbing back and spraying as neither painter mentioned bare metal re-spray

so that give you an idea on what it cost to paint a car. i have plenty to think about. if it happens should I let a pro paint it for $10,000 or just settle for backyard billy  for the usual $600 special  maybe less

I'm not surprised. I thought they'd say 10k as soon as I began reading your post.
Another option is to hire a booth and do it yourself in 2pak :D

Happy Birthday BB!

At those prices not worth reverting to Sunlight Silver even to sell.

well it actually is too  after spending over 3 hours yesterday fitting the cai to the lotus which was a lot easier said than done...... plus it slipped off the jack too through carelessness on my behalf. but lucky for me I had the wheels still on and it was just 5cm off the ground. totally bend my mx5 jack so its stuffed! but a good lesson just the same.

anyway what I didn't say about the trip to the paint shop was one painter looked under the bonnet and said to her - who painted one side of this with a paint brush...........well I guess that was me

well that was years back and I started keen but it was just too hard and fiddly to do. I bet nitro was laughing about that when he pulled the motor

so today I have started stripping stuff from the right hand side of the engine bay to go in and try and do a bit of a tidy up on what was not the best bit of work to look at but no bad for a paint brush  plus it was mostly all covered up too  well most of it.

I will then just spray it back to the original colour of the other two sides and leave it at that  if I had not sent her to the paint shop I wouldn't be where I am now  anyway I will have a go at fixing it up and will see how it turns out

I've been thinking over that spray painters quote to do the engine bay for $800 I think he was just talking about doing this side only not the complete engine bay - a lot more work involved than one would think just painting this side

part 1.

first off I removed all I could from the left side engine bay and what was left masked or taped it over. then gave the lot a wet rub with 800 sandpaper with a few drop of detergent added

next up gave it a good clean with grease and wax remover and finally out with the wives hairdryer to remove any wet areas missed.

gave the whole area a hit with all purpose primer and waited 30 minutes. the primer looked identical to the factory colour on the other side and rear but I had order the sunlight silver paint and I read somewhere on this forum the engine bay was painted in sunlight silver with a clear coat.

I had doubt that this was right but I went ahead and spray it and I got exactly what I bought -sunlight silver and it did not match my other two factory painted areas. so that was a complete waste of time 'paint and money

part 2.

so I waited another half hour as it was close on 20 degree gave the silver a slight dry scuff with 1000 grit and re- applied the all purpose primer. no doubt that was a very close match of grey and after that hit it with a couple of coats of clear.

anyway that appears to have worked a treat and all matches fine. white side of the engine bay is gone and the several hours put into it was worth the effort.
