[SA] Anyone got a Velo or Mazdaspeed fixed bucket in their NA/NB

Postby captaincabinets » Sat Nov 19, 2016 11:16 am

Would be great to have a sit in one in-car before I buy one.

Thanks

To see if it fits the car or to see if it's comfy for you to sit in?

I'm in Vic, so I can't really help but to say my dad has a pair of old Velo seats in his TA22 race car and they are way more comfy that the Sparco Revs that I have in my Mx5.

As far as fitment - it's a pain, and the shorter you are, the worse it gets. I'm 180cm tall and the seats contact everything - the tranny tunnel driver's side, the exhaust lump on the passenger side, you name it, it's in the way.

Autosport on Magill Rd stock Velo, you can at least sit in one in store. I think it was the GPT1 they recommended for an MX5.

Thanks guys

I spoke to Autosport, they say that even having the seat loose in the passenger spot isn't indicative of how it'll actually sit in the car, unfortunately.

I'm close to 6ft so looking for a lower seat so that's not an issue!

I've tried to put a gpt-1 in my SE before. Impossible without removing trim and bashing metal. Had to settle for a shitty sprint V. Fits like a glove but isn't comfortable. I've had a bride fixed back in my car before hand as well. That fitted nicely and was very snug to sit in. Great seat but didn't have enough head protection from my roll bar.

I got to sit in a Mazdaspeed fixed bucket seat today and OMG its tight! I'm relatively skinny (65kg) and I hardly fit, it's seriously small. Over any distance it would be uncomfortable for me. That was the first time I've ever felt fat

I'm going to sit in a GPT-1 to make sure it suits and then contact Velo about getting the wings custom cut down to fit inside an NB.
Apparently they will customise orders on request (for a cost unknown at the moment)

Thanks for the replies all. Roadrunner can you please let me know the price for the customisation on this thread, I was thinking about going the same route.

You need to check it will clear the transmission tunnel as well as the door/window. It's not uncommon to have to attack the car with a hammer to get seats to fit. I've got a no name fixed back seat in mine that fits really well but that was more good luck that good management. I've been looking to upgrade it but haven't found anything other than the sprint that drops straight in.

Would they foul against where the belt comes out of the B pillar? They did on a set (or RX7 ones, not sure) I looked at a few years ago. Those ones restricted how far back the seat could move as well as inhibiting the recline function.

Seatbelt will have to pull over the wing, but you'd need to try pretty hard to get the seat to actually foul on the pillar.

Then again, I'm not as tall as you.

Far more common for contact between the wing and the door trim. Just avoidable with my seats and setup. But there's definite hard contact between tranny tunnel and the front left of the driver's seat.

Pretty sure that the exhaust lump has been slightly deformed by the installation of the passenger side - no hammers, just the way it's mounted to the original points.

True about feeling big in an mx5. I'm 180cm, 63kg, and I'm pretty snug in the Sparco Revs.
