Anyone run nitrogen in their tyres?

Postby ricky-pinky » Thu Nov 17, 2016 11:27 am

For all those who swear by inflating their tyres with nitrogen, I came across a video on this topic on YouTube.

Quite interesting.

Love the way the presenter delivers his message.

Yup. Good one.

I had one of the sales gains at a large tyre chain once tell me "Nitrogen is the standard now, and by next year it will be required by law". Obviously never went back there again.

While I can be blunt. I don't think I'm that funny though.

I always figured that was the case, but was interested to know just how different the heat expansion and total weight differences would be.

All true. The only reason racers use it is for consistency of pressures from track to track. The moisture in air while minimal can take up a little of their tuning and valuable set up time. It's one less variable to consider.

Which racers are you referring to?
If you're using compressed air from a tank at 1000kPa to inflate your tyres at 200kPa, the drop in pressure (slightly offset by expansion in volume) will cause a temperature decrease as the air leaves the compressed tank. This causes the water vapour present in normal air to condense into its liquid state, which can then be separated out using a garden variety moisture filter:
http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Blackridge-Air-Inline-Water-Trap/340079
So the air you're putting into your tyres is essentially dry.

My main gripe with the nitrogen thing is that there is no way to fill a tyre with 100% nitrogen. When the tyre fitter puts the tyre on the wheel, there is air inside that tyre at 100kPa (14ishPSI, because that's the normal, everyday pressure in which we live). Whether you add air or nitrogen to that doesn't change the fact that there is still normal air in that tyre. The only way to get 100% Nitrogen in a tyre is to take it back to a complete vacuum then fill with nitrogen, which is horrendously impractical as a tyre will break its seal with the wheel if you try to do that.

Now with all that money I'm now saving per tyre refill. I can buy a huge rear wing for my FWD car. Downforce!!!

Actually, race wheels like 6UL have 2 valve on opposite sides to allow the tyre to be purged while its flushed with nitrogen, then filled.

the more you know.

Actually my Kosei K1s have two valves. I get the most queries about those than I do anything else on my car! I just tell people it's so I don't have to bend over so far to check my tyre pressures. That and it makes my rims more balanced.

^also handy when you have the pushy pump on one valve, and can check the pressure on the other...

Ahhhhh that makes sense. Don't think your average tyre fitter will be purging like that though, no matter how many valves you have.
