Actually, when I asked Dann to quote me for the work, I also asked him to quote me for a twistmount combo and turbo. This was shortly after Sam's Part 2 video came out, and the lure of 260whp was strong! I tossed and turned and had some restless nights thinking about Garrett vs IHI. Is the extra power worth the extra cost? Will I do the turbo eventually anyway? Shouldn't I just get it done now? ... I asked IanR a bunch of questions until I was sure I was going to go against my better judgement and do it!

But some modicum of sense finally kicked in. I wasn't even using all I had on the base tune. 90% of my driving is in daily traffic, even on mountain blasts I'm not going "hell for leather". A modest bump in power and a better curve is what I needed for the moment. Eventually the motor will need a rebuild and/or the turbo will wear, but until then I'll have plenty of fun just pushing the IHI for all it's worth.

And then, I'll build the engine, and put a bigger, better turbo on it!

Just wait Lokiel, very soon he will park it in his garage and just tinker never allowing it to be exposed to UV rays again, rather it gets to live under the soft glow of fluro lights :)

With the usual add ons to the SE, the extra power is nice, but it comes with the well known degradation in driving enjoyment. Mine feels so much smoother with the Chiptorque upgrade and I can now enjoy the extra hp and driveability and it is now an absolute bundle of fun to drive. Knowing how good mine now feels, your's with that extra hp again over mine and with Dann's tune would feel even better! ...

I'm as surprised as you are! I've made a number of expensive decisions on this car so far, and thought for sure this would be another!

Never! I had to drive the Mrs's Outlander all week while my car was with Dann, it was comfortable, quiet and easy to get out of, but oh so slow, ponderous and boring. I would like a "daily" car, and to keep the MX-5 as the fun toy, and to be able to do mods myself that take more than a day, but I don't know if that's likely to ever happen.

Well two examples of this situation, ie. daily + SE for tinkering and fun are Lokiel and myself, what do we have in common?...... Single....

Nevyn72, next year sometime you can do this too! Oh and don't worry, the bat cave is safe :o

Thanks guys. It was worth the effort, I always knew it would be - I just had to wait for the stars to align!

My new angle to get a daily car is to enter every car giveaway competition in hopes of getting lucky!

Get a motorbike (scooter) for daily duties. It is cheaper and the urge to modify a bike used for daily duties will be minimal.

We will be get really worried when you start asking questions about tow vehicles and trailers.

Nah, one of the main purposes of the daily will be dog transport! Daily will be either a hatch back or a station wagon. I'd love a Liberty GT, but I know I'd mod that almost as much as the MX-5! The trick will be getting something I'll leave alone

As I eluded to earlier, I asked Dann to do a little extra work in addition to the tune. This might be a big post, but there's pictures to keep your attention

First up was installing some injectors I'd bought earlier. Flow Force 640s are based on Bosch EV14s (as are Injector Dynamics), they come Plug and Play ready, with all the pigtails and spacers ready to roll, and at US$300, they're probably the best bang for buck injector on the market. The only downside is that they're likely too small to ever provide me enough fuel for E85, if I ever want to go to a flex fuel setup I'll need to replace them. Dann installed these for me befor the tune, they're actually tested to flow at an average of 655cc/min!

Pretty packaging!

Megasquirt has inbuilt Electronic Boost Control, you just need to replace the stock boost solenoid with a MAC Valve and setup and tune it appropriately. I had previously replaced my dodgy "bog" solenoid with just such a MAC valve, but seeing as Megasquirt bypasses that mess I have reverted back to the stock solenoid (needed to complete the vacuum circuits - but unused), and re-purposed the MAC Valve for boost duties. I let Dann handle the wiring and plumbing on this, as well sas the tuning of course.

Image
My dodgy crimps are showing!

A little while back I ordered some Hybrid Motor Mounts from 949Racing.com. They're hybrid in the sense that on one side of the motor you have a polyurethane mount, and the other side you have a Mazdaspeed Competition rubber mount. 949 advertise these as having 80% of the engine locating that 2 poly mounts would provide, whilst only slightly increasing NVH over what 2 Mazdaspeed Comp mounts would deliver. IE, lots of strength and stability without the harshness. I read up a bit on doing the install of these and read a few too many horror stories, so I figured I'd best leave the job to someone with all the tools and experience to get the job done. And Dann told me there were a few troubles!

The mounts certainly anchor the engine more solidly. One of my old mounts was completely broken, and the other wasn't in great shape. The NVH is now getting up there. I like it, it really makes the car feel purposeful and provides excellent feedback, but if you're sensitive to noise (like my Mrs), then it's a bridge too far. As it was I made my drive home, 9 hours straight, without issue. But the cabin is quite buzy now, with the combination of mounts, intake and exhaust noise. This isn't a "cardigan" car!

Image
That poly mount is bigger and heavier than I expected

If you know SEs/MSMs, you'll know it has a catch-can built in to the strut tower, that drains back into. And you might also know that it's not a very good solution, and often once you've added a few bolt-ons and start making more power and boost the system oil starts going places it shouldn't! So I asked Dann for one of his very nice catch cans, that I'm sure you've all seen. I considered other aftermarket alternatives, but Dann's design looks to cover reliability very well, comes with excellent fittings, and it looks very nice snugged in next to the shock. Dann had to plug up the stock drain port, I'll just use the drain tap periodically to empty the system.

This is Dann's photo of the catch-can

A few weeks ago I ordered a Cappuccino washer bottle from Amayama, with the plan of replacing my stock washer bottle with the new unit - creating a much freer engine bay, and fabbing up some brackets and extending the harness. When I got to the workshop, Dann asked me what I thought of his new product - a stainless washer bottle designed to bolt in where the Cappuccino bottle would go, but without the need for brackets, and he'd include a harness extension! It looked excellent, and I told him so. It would sell really well. I thought if I didn't have the Cappuccino at home then it would be perfect, but I'd stick with what I had - maybe I'd buy an extension from him to save myself some trouble.

Then while I was home Dann advertised the washer bottle on Facebook and here in the forums using my car as the test fit model - and I had to have it! I guess I have a Cappuccino bottle to sell

http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=82&t=73508

And the final piece of work! I asked Dann to fabricate me an airbox for my intake. I didn't love having the filter exposed, and seeing the likes of Kev's, Lokiel's and others running the BEGi intake, I knew I wanted a box made. I knew Dann had made a few for various builds he'd done, and asked him for one. Originally the plan was just to modify the intake I already had (a previous NitroDann fabrication), but Dann realised he'd need to change so much of it, it'd be better to just make a new one from scratch and that way I could sell the old one. It's a very sexy piece, and along with the washer bottle and catch can, it really adds some bling to the engine bay!

Image
Bling Bling!

Now all I need is Dann to make a radiator overflow bottle to balance out the engine bay! I'll be keeping everything raw stainless I think. Though someday I may clean them all up a bit and spray them in clear coat for a nice finish.

I've got a few more pictures to share about placement of things and plumbing etc, but this post is big enough for now I think.

Thank you Dann for all your hard work!

Great post - we all love pretty pictures! Did you get slugged for an expensive shipping fee for the injectors from the states?

Your result has helped me make up my mind so thanks a lot for sharing... originally I was going to get an exhaust and tune and call it a day, keeping the car looking "stock" whilst correcting the crappy factory tune.

The more I thought about it, the more I wondered if I should consider extra pieces "whilst the car is in for a tune" to avoid having to do rework should I end up hungry for more power later down the track.
Over the course over a month, I've now decided I'm going to upgrade everything bar turbo and manifold... I was also going to take it to a shop in Sydney for the fab work so that I can easily pick up my stock pieces... but I think I'll end up taking it all to Dann. Now just waiting for him to get back to me on pricing and availability!

AHA! I knew it - you waited 'til "the missus" was gone a week and got the upgrades done while she was away :P

Lots of modz here - now need a full shot of the engine bay.

Regarding the extra NVH: Once you start stiffening your car you'll really notice the rattles so it's worth "de-rattling" everything you can. I'm in the process of installing 2xOLED digital gauges into my fuel and coolant OEM gauge slots so while everything is apart I'm taking the opportunity to minimise any cable rattles.

The FF injectors is quite a small package. I can't remember the shipping costs, but it wasn't anything crazy.

Dann is a one-stop shop, and if you're in Sydney it's a no-brainer to me! So close, so convenient. Just discuss what you want your end result to be and I'm sure you'll be happy. Do keep in mind my NVH is quite high now, if that's an issue for you maybe consider a quieter exhaust, and stick with rubber mounts.

Lokiel wrote:AHA! I knew it - you waited 'til "the missus" was gone a week and got the upgrades done while she was away :P

Nah, she was home the whole time. I took the week of work to get a bunch of small tasks done around the house, hang out with the dog and relax. So I was also taxi driver for the week. It was a good week, managed a good balance of getting stuff done and relaxing - shame it was so damn hot!

I may do some dynamat, or similar, some day soon. Nothing really rattles, just vibrates. Nothing I can't manage daily, though others might be more sensitive to it.
