Re: Lachstock and Four Turbo Charged Cylinders ['04 NB SE]
I completed the drive trouble free in about 9 hours, I'm at the airport now with a much needed beer.
I met Dann and talked mx5s and turbos at the workshop for a while before he ran me out here in his "ute". I could spend ages exploring the workshop, and Dann could talk for hours telling me about everything ;)
Now the waiting begins.

Re: Lachstock and Four Turbo Charged Cylinders ['04 NB SE]
Back in the early 80's when I had my HJ Monaro and later a HQ GTS Monaro, the local "guru" of the 308 worked just down the road from me here. Me and my mates, who all had 308's and a couple of lucky guys with the Chevy 350, use to live down at his workshop every weekend. What you couldn't find down there didn't exist lol. Great memories .....
I reckon Dann's place would be just like that old workshop!

Re: Lachstock and Four Turbo Charged Cylinders ['04 NB SE]
Tomorrow. Pick up is Friday, I'll be there early in the morning, but we might need a little fettling before I head off.
Initial reports put the base tune I was running at ~145whp - I guessed 175, how wrong was I!
Tuned making 225whp.
Should be a fun drive home.

Can't type - driving!
I'll so a full report tomorrow but the car is definitely faster and stronger everywhere, very linear, the car just wants to push on. I need to get used to the higher rev limiter too

Re: Lachstock and Four Turbo Charged Cylinders ['04 NB SE]
OK, let's get straight to the part everyone wants to see - Dynos! (showing WHP and AFR lines)
Before
This is the conservative tune Dann did remotely after I installed the Megasquirt, stock injectors, stock boost (~7.5psi). You can easily see where boost stops building and the power levels off. I thought I'd be on 175whp or there abouts, 143 was a bit of a shock
After!
This is after Dann worked his magic! We're now topping out at 15psi, which is at the edge of the IHI's efficiency, but still making safe power. The power continues out to 7200RPM but doesn't rise much more than that. Dann cut the run short after he achieved the curve he was looking for, an earlier run was a bit more aggressive and made 227hp running out to 7200RPM but Dann felt it was pushing the edge a bit much so adjusted the curve to what you see, and didn't need to go to redline again.
The car feels stronger everywhere now, and just wants to push on and on. Getting used to pushing past 6000RPM is fun! I feel I can actually run the car at higher RPMs with confidence now, before I wouldn't hold it above 6000 for long at all, the car just didn't seem happy, but now it does, and it pushes on for another 1000RPM too! Also, I now have confidence to use the full range of throttle, before I would very rarely use 100%, on the stock ECU there was the "hesitation" and boost cut, and on Megasquirt I wasn't sure how safe the tune was at the topend and there was still boost cut. But now I can give it the beans with confidence!
At cruise and out of boost there's not much change, but once you put your foot down, power builds very quickly and very linearly, and before you know it the scenery is a blur. The car isn't an unmanageable monster, it's not a supercar, the wheels don't struggle for grip. But we've now milked the little IHI for all it's worth, and the car is quick and fun. I'm very happy with the results.
I asked Dann to make a few other changes while the car was down South, but I'll talk about them another time.

Of course I'm happy. But if you think I'll stop making more mods, you're as crazy as I am!

Thanks for posting the dyno before and after results.
Extended periods over 14psi aren't healthy for the stock IHI and at 15psi you're just pushing hot air.
Should keep you happy until you're ready to fund the next step :^)

Re: Lachstock and Four Turbo Charged Cylinders ['04 NB SE]
I recall someone posting the compressor map at mazda-speed.com, 15psi was pushing the edge of efficiency but still good. I think the common belief that the IHI is no good over 13PSI comes from a time when everyone ran a 2.5" exhaust and the back pressure became too great to flow properly. Dann said he could increase the boost further and maybe eek out another 5PSI, but that would really be pushing temps up and in his opinion not worth it.
At any rate, I won't be running too hard for too long very often, and I trust in Dann
I should be happy with 225whp.
At least for a little while.
OK, maybe 6 months!
Actually, when I asked Dann to quote me for the work, I also asked him to quote me for a twistmount combo and turbo. This was shortly after Sam's Part 2 video came out, and the lure of 260whp was strong! I tossed and turned and had some restless nights thinking about Garrett vs IHI. Is the extra power worth the extra cost? Will I do the turbo eventually anyway? Shouldn't I just get it done now? ... I asked IanR a bunch of questions until I was sure I was going to go against my better judgement and do it!
But some modicum of sense finally kicked in. I wasn't even using all I had on the base tune. 90% of my driving is in daily traffic, even on mountain blasts I'm not going "hell for leather". A modest bump in power and a better curve is what I needed for the moment. Eventually the motor will need a rebuild and/or the turbo will wear, but until then I'll have plenty of fun just pushing the IHI for all it's worth.
And then, I'll build the engine, and put a bigger, better turbo on it!
