ND gearbox failures: Official Mazda TSB

Postby oppolock » Sun Nov 13, 2016 9:30 am

For those who have been following the saga of the disintegrating ND gearboxes, or are concerned about our own cars, it has just been posted on miata.net that Mazda have published an official TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) on the subject.
Copy of TSB is attached.

I'll put that in the archives if I ever buy a 2nd hand ND.
Never put the top up unless the storm has a name.

That means every ND on the road now is susceptible to this failure. This is a repeat of the SNC problem of the early NAs, or the NB thrust washers.

Not good. Anything from Mazda Australia?

I assume that everybody gets the same gearbox, that it is not something that only applies to certain cars, say to LHD markets?

I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)

Thanks for the bulletin Brian.Must be costing them a packet given that there are numerous instances of complete softop replacements as well in the US.

So far I haven't seen evidence of either problem but you would think that having identified the potential they would have to fix both these issues well beyond warranty.

Have any ND owners had either issue in Aus? Our cars are the same in gearbox and softop so you would think there would be .Yanks don't get 1.5 so gearbox in that out here may not be as susceptable. No wonder Fiat
went for a stronger box (NCbased?) to cope with the extra torque of the turbo.

Peter.
