Re: MADJAK's NA8 - 200+HP N/A
I was thinking I could head over for the Australian Hillclimb Champs which I think might be in SA next year and then continue on and run at a few tracks like Philip Island, Winton Park or something. Most likely my family will want to come across too so it might become a logistical nightmare but it might work.
What tracks / hillclimb / sprints do you think should be on my hit list?
Philip Island
Winton Park
Wakefield
Eastern Creek

I'd love to do QLD but I'm not going to be able to go there without the camper to do the cape and fraser island.
Is there any way to run Bathurst?

I believe the bathurstlightcarclub.com.au run hillclimbs a few times a year on Mt Panorama - it's on my long list along with Legend of the Lakes in Mt Gambier.

down vote for sandown. it's just not an MX-5 track.

Why do you say that, Beavis? Too stop/start, not enough long corners?

Re: MADJAK's NA8 - 200+HP N/A
It's very much a horsepower circuit. Two long straights and a couple of corners at each end. It's still fun to drive fast, but it does not bring the same level of challenge and satisfaction as PI or Winton.

Re: MADJAK's NA8 - 200+HP N/A
We only really have two tracks over here, Barbagallo which has two longish straights but a good challenging esses and sweeper up over the hill. It's good fun but no really high speed corners. Collie is a small track that really suits the MX5 well and I'm fast compared to other cars on it because it's so tight.
I have Beavis's excellent video on Philip Island so I now know that track already! I should be able to jump in the car and nail it! The reason is attracts me is the high speed cornering and the technical positioning between corners. It will suit my driving style I think.
As for other tracks, I do like elevation changes and skipping off kerbs. Anything that gets a grin on my face and my hands trembling.

Re: MADJAK's NA8 - 200+HP N/A
The esses at Barbagallo are just flat for me, so not really a challenge at all. I need more power!
Barbs does seem to me to be quite a power sensitive track, maybe similar to Sandown? But there are a couple of long corners that the MX5 seems to do pretty well in, T4 (the left hand sweeper) and T6 (the basin).
The short track is definitely the layout more suited to the MX5.

Re: MADJAK's NA8 - 200+HP N/A
The esses are flat out for me... but it's a real challenge over the crest just before the left hander to stay on the power without lifting and then brake hard into the sweeper. Timing and track positioning is critical to get the car straight before braking otherwise it's all over and I'd be off the track at speed. Then to stay flat on the power up over the crest of the hill I need to be in the right spot on the apex of the right hander kink otherwise I'll be off the track at the top. If I miss the apex I need to lift otherwise I'll be in the dirt up over the hill.
It's not hard once you are used to it... but it's a big leap of faith to get there the first time, especially with a high power level. There is around a second in it from a more sedate safer line. It might all be different now that I have my rear wing as it will help settle the car through that section.
I'm hoping to get in to the low 67's on the long track, maybe even the 66's. I'll need that to win class.

Re: MADJAK's NA8 - 200+HP N/A
67/66 is bloody quick, here I am going around in 71s...
I can pretty much place the car wherever I want for the entry of T4, I'm not grip or traction limited coming up through the crest over the last ess, just not going quick enough to be.
I've generally just been trying to find the line that allows me to get on the power as early as I can, but no matter what T5 has been pretty easy-flat.
What do you think A050s are worth in lap time compared to NT01s?
