Great news errrr......in a sense that you now have the issue & can sort it out.

You will have to pull it down completely.
I would get a complete kit perhaps even including the water pump since it appeared you don't have the history of the car. Or I've missed it .

It appears your competent with tools. If you like instructions you can find them on Miat.net in the garage section.
If it's the first time you're doing it, prepare yourself for a 5 hr or so afternoon doing it.

As far as the rotation goes. As long as your no 1 cylinder is on TDC and the mark on the crank sprocket is at 12 noon (visible at 90deg or on top. You then need to line up your cams.

Love your work. Hope you get to fix it real soon & take her for a joyful spin

Ive only changed one timing belt but that was on a forester so this should be much easier. Ill just get the belt because it was changed by a mechanic with waterpump etc about 15000 ago . Ill try to figure out why its gone bad so quickly

Yes, & it looks like you are at the right TDC ie end of compression, start of power stroke, as both inlet & exhaust valves look closed. If you rotate crank another 360 deg, both inlet & exhaust would be slightly open (end of exhaust, start of intake stroke).
Looks like belt timing is out 5 or 6 teeth!!

It Lives!!!!! Turned out a random bolt was bouncing around the timing belt and put a few holes in it. New belt is in and it started straight up. Thanks for all the help everyone.
