But no new news about final pricing?

When orders were being taken on 6 October they still only had estimates.

Roadster MT $40k (~$45k including on-roads)
GT MT $45k (~$50k including on-roads.)

US RF = +$2500USD on equivalent ST variant.
Aus RF = +$6000AUD on equivalent ST variant.

Is it common for car manufacturers to take deposits when they don't yet have exact pricing? Or can you order without paying a deposit?
I've never bought a new car but am curious about the process.

Yes, just make sure it's 100% refundable if you're not happy with the price or quality of vehicle.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

If you are paying a deposit there will be clear conditions on what basis that it's done. People order Mustangs and Focus RS often with a wait list of + 12 mths so consider just that time frame alone - so many things can happen to a persons circumstances in that time and unknown purchase price is a real factor.

I've bought my last 10 cars from the same dealer. Never been stiffed, always great service. Of all the motor companies I've ever dealt (and it's a few), the guys at Grand Prix Mazda are the best.

Paid deposits and only on my ND and the RF did I not have an exact price.

Sometimes you gotta trust in the system. I'm yet to be wrong with those guys.

Ten cars and all from the same dealer : its good for them as well.

I have only bought one new car and that was so long ago that one of the options was steel wheels rather than the stock artillery wheels .

The best service I have had on spares for any car is Toyota which still stocks some parts for vehicles that were used on the Snowy Mountain Scheme. They make Mazda spares in Aust a bare pass mark. Don't trust the word of any dealer when it actually comes to the folding stuff still used as legal tender. The paper work should spell out the conditions .

Interestingly I spoke to a neighbour this morning who told me, some dealers for a certain in demand car ,a model which he owns after a 9 mth wait , were taking an extra $10,000 dlrs to provide quick delivery of said model car.. It does not sound quite right as a practice and if one were unkind it sounds like opportunism or just good business?

That also happened in late 1989 with the first batch of 200 MX5s - was looking to buy one, but wasn't prepared to pay the extra $10k, which at the time was 33% in addition to the $29.9k RRP.
Instead bought one of the first 200 the following year with 3k kms for $25k.

lucky for me I class the ND as a pretty good looking sports car and it reminds me of an early '70s mini corvette 8) especially in the front wheel arch area. I will probably be chasing the best deal I can get for cash rather than engine size because I feel neither motor is going to impress me.

but I did take a close look at an ND at a dealer today and they certainly look like they are put together nicely. very impressed with the paint an panel fit too. the unit on the lot had the cloth interior so I guess it was the standard model. but overall it didn't look too bad either. i'd say pretty sporty compared to my NB. although the wife did comment it appears small  I said ...you are talking about the car aren't you

she just shook her head and I am now back on medication and being treated for shock!

Here's the Official price list I received from Mazda today.

I expected to pay about 50G's for the top of the wazza unit, machine Gun Grey GT, Piano Black roof, 2.0litre (we won't be getting 1.5 litre RF's apparently), Nappa Leather.
Building 15th December....January delivery, I hope!

...cos they know they can charge that and people will pay.

Or you can not pay it and have the grey roof. It's really a personal choice. I've seen both and I love the look.

One month today before they start making my car....OOH, it's beginning to feel a lot like Xmas!!
