I saw this car once on a club run before the turbo mods were done, 2.0L Manual.

The before numbers are roughly on par with what they are getting in the US for a factory standard vehicle.......

What are the issues Peter?

A very small number (confirmed that is) have failed spectacularly (without warning) stripping 2nd or 3rd gear completely.

Noting official from Mazda but the suggestion was a 'batch' metallurgy issue without any indication on how many boxes are affected.

See this thread for the less hysterical version.......

A couple of guys on the big forum have had multiple gearbox replacements, usually ,but not exclusively, with some motorsport involvement and Mazda seems to recognise the issue and are replacing them.If they have identified that it is a particular issue ( as Nevyn72 has rightly said)then given the degree of traceability that is built into auto parts it is a wonder they have not identified the affected boxes and replaced them rather than have people driving around waiting for a time bomb to go off.

I ahve not heard of any failures here but was just making the general comment that if there are weaknesses the huge increae in torque with the turbo would be a concern.

Car cos evaluate whether recalls are necessary. Recalls can cost huge amounts of money. Its common practise to only replace certain items if they fail or if safety is an issue. Mazda did not recall clutches for certain NBs. Replacing gearboxes on a manual car is a major operation including the cost of a presumably a complete new gearbox. The average MX5 owner is not going to turbo a car nor use it for motor sport so its conceivable that its not a major issue. Warranties are there to protect the consumer.

Traceability in cars is also not quite as extensive as people might think. There is positively no complete traceability for a complete vehicle. A gearbox is made of hundreds of components and some of those components are made by component makers. Both the component maker and the car co will not have full traceability for every component. Example a moulding sometimes has date on it or a cavity number but does that then trace back to the batch and date for the raw material.? Metal parts often have no identification as to manufacture date and consequently no trace back to the process or raw material. Car cos dont demand nor practise full traceability and if they did the cost would be astronomical with a what return for investment. Aviation is a somewhat different situation as far as I know.

Read about the Flyin Miata 6.2 litre conversion and this is insanely brilliant!!

It combines 2 of my automotive passions, v8 engines and sportscars all in one devilish package.

Mud Flaps. Went to Clark Rubber and purchased 1 metre of 3mm thick 200mm wide rubber belting. Using some cardboard and made a template for some front mud flaps using the three lower mounting clips at the back of the inner guard as the mounting points for the mud flaps when trimmed. When trimmed, the outer edge of the flap is just outside the line of the tyres meaning no more dirty car sides and no more stone chips at the backs of the side skirts. Cut the flaps around 50 mm lower than the bottom of the guards and they will be around 180mm at their widest point (finishes where the inner guard folds around the back of the guard) and mount the flaps between the inner guard and the guard itself. Looks a little rally car-ish like but very effective. Actually got 2 sets of flaps for a grand total of $14 with around 100mm of belting left over. Cheapest mod yet!

Yes, pictures please. Thinking of doing the same since I fitted wider wheels and tyres, and live on gravel road.

Sorry guys, have tried a few different ways to attach photo's. Either I am useless or not allowed to attach personal photo's yet. Will keep trying, but not the most computer literate operator.

You can't attach pics direct from your phone unless you have an app like tapatalk. Otherwise you need a third party image hosting site like imgur or photo bucket.

We all need pics :)
