Replicating a rare Moto-Lita Gear Knob

Hi,

i especially registered because i was googling after stuff when i bumped into this thread. Reason for ending up here is as follows: i am a steering wheel collector, mostly only momo ones. But my eye fell upon a steering wheel that i hadnt seen before and which did seem interesting.

So anyway, the actual reasing for registering here. I was wondering if it would still be possible to order one of these knobs and in addition, what will the cost be?
Also, what type of securement will the knob have (as in how to attach it)?

Noted Robin, The gear knobs will have the M10 x 1.25 pitch to screw onto your mx5. Except for Kian's, his is a M15 x 1 or something like that.

Hi, do you have a price estimate for one of these knobs? I'm basically just interested because it would go well with the steering wheel but if it appears to be expensive i might bail this ship. Thanks!

Price estimate.......
As you could imagine, manufacturing prototypes is hugely expensive if I were to break down what these things have actually cost they would be well over $400 each but I will be looking at around $220 each. Machined, Laser etched, Polished and clear coated. That's way less than cost and doesn't include any of my hours. Just time on the machine with no set
I'm not doing this to make money. It is to help Kian out and his BMW project. I have all the CNC equipment and I like doing this sort of stuff.
This wont include the Moto-Lita enamel filled brass logo on the top. That is another thing all together but if we get a few made it shouldn't be too bad.

They will be lovely though. I might even put one in my SP

Still a week or so away from even being machined as of today.

Hi Richard,

i just thought of this thread and it came to mind that i needed to let you know that i am no longer interested in one of these shift knobs. I'm sure they will come out nice but if i count up the costs, i believe it is more than what i had hoped for and in the end, i'm a momo guy. I found this thread because of that original moto-lita wheel i showed here and i felt i had to jump in here to ask about it. I didn't really think this trough and in the end, it's a bit more than i can chew... Thanks anyway and good look with the project!

You cant put price on passion. As an enthusiast with passion for classic cars, we would not rest until we have things that are rare and beautiful to our individual taste, and then we use them in our cars so these parts will pay for themselves.

You certainly can put a price on passion- I have made that decision many times. Making low volumes one offs etc cop all the overheads and set up , machine rates etc.

Anyone interested in matching steering wheels can look into Moto-Lita site. They are made in UK and reasonably priced. I've been told they make custom steering wheels with boss kit to fit most cars. Here are some pics:

Two things,
a) Am I on the 'definitely in' list? Because if I don't get one I'll just set my whole car on fire.

b) Adam's horn badges won't fit the moto-lita horn button; it's massive with a very small inset for a tiny badge. I'm 90% sure anyway, I should go out and measure.

Looks like you're using E-Type centre horn. Moto-Lita has a standard chrome horn housing. You can either buy that and stick the barge you buy from Adam on top or you can ask Adam to custom make a horn badge for you.
