Got the calipers off and pulled down over the weekend. I was pleasantly surprised. I'd had problems with the handbrake sticking on the right hand side so I was expecting issues.
Fronts were great bit gummy on the pistons around the piston seals.
Rear left was pretty good, rear right had a bit of corrosion un the lip for the piston just deal and the handbrake arm was quite stiff to pull out. Inspection showed that seal had been letting gunk through. Everything in the hydraulic portions looked in really good shape. The rear adjusting bolts were also in good shape which is good as they are the most expensive part!
I could probably get away with just piston seals and dust boots rather than full a full rubber / rebuild kit. For the reasonably small dollars saved however I think it's worth the piece of mind putting a full kit through.
I need to clean all the items down properly before I order. The handbrake pushrods may get changed if they don't clean up well.
The only item I wasn't able to disassemble was the slider pin out of the rears that has the internal hex. It certainly looks to be screwed in piece but Mazda don't exploded it in the parts diagram or give it a part number.
All the other slider pins look ok but I remember other here having pad wear issues that went away when they changed slider pins despite the pins looking fine so I'll do just do them as well.

Re: sailaholic NA8
Engine has arrived!
Unfortunately the couriers were not very careful and knocked the airbox off and munched the trumpets also some damage to the airbox and base plate.
Engine was sent by the seller uninsured and e-go take no liability for any damage in transport even at their fault. Nice!
I got the engine home and had a look over things.
ITB set up like looks nice and different from most others I've seen.
Injectors have a Ford logo on them, so I assume not rx7 injectors. Have yet to pull them off and get a part number
There appears to have been an air-oil cooler used. I'll be converting back to the factory water / oil cooler for packaging and hopefully some tweaks so it get cooler water then the stock flow path.
Flipped the cam cover off and found...
The cams were one of the least clear details of could get pre purchase. Turns out to be significantly smaller then the best guess. 35.86 base circle, welded and reground 9.3mm lift. Haven't put a dial gauge on and degreed them to determine the duration.
Still single valve springs and I was told hydraulic lifters. Lifter bores have had some light clearancing work.
Headers look pretty good, secondaries are slip on and quite short.
Clutch appears to be a 4 pick on a after market light fly wheel. Crank pully appears to have the front row machined off it.
Engine looks read to run (had plugs and coil pack etc on it. But needs the dipsticks installed and oil pump priming port closed off.
Spares - the for sale post advertised there being spare pistons. Unfortunately on delivery and inspection I appear to have 10x stock pistons BNIB from Ford with part numbers and 1 random high comp piston.
I did get a set of piston rings to suit a Nissan 86mm piston with "Mazda BP 1975cc" hand written on them and a new set of crank bearings though.
Originally I was planning and not pulling the sump, inspecting things, installing a baffle I'd there wasn't one etc etc.
Unfortunately on Thursday I was notified that the house I am currently renting is getting bulldozed to make way for high density living and I have 2 months to vacate.
This steps up the timeline somewhat significantly and if I'd know that 2 weeks earlier (they had previously indicated I'd get another 6 month renewal) I wouldnt have started the build!
Based on this the new plan is to get the engine in and running quickly. To do this the new engine will go in fitted with the existing maxim works headers and cat back exhaust and a stock intake manifold. Itbs are unlikely to fit off the bat and I would need to work out a filtration system for them.
Some of the other maintenance and side upgrades will also go for now hold until after then move.
So between doing house inspections today I continued with the stripping.
All the AC is now out, including under dash, power steer is all out except the rack. Both items will be sold.
I also got around to install the willwood proportioning valve I've had for about 3 years. It would never fit with put new brake lines running the other side of the master cylinder with the previous itb kit.
Plohl came for a visit to see the engine and we started working out the wiring changes for the extra sensors and the innovate SSI-4 as well as some general wiring tidy up of previous bits and pieces. In the process we noticed adaptronic has some new ecu put and a new software interface!
Last parts to come out will be the subframe, which I'm waiting on collecting the NB version before starting the removal.
I'll have to get the parts I need ordered this week or that will start to hold me up.

News!
So 2 months after I started to pull the engine out, nearly 4.5 months since it drove into the garage and 4 days before I hand the house keys back. tonight it went back on the wheels for the first time and drove to the new home.
Updates have been non existent due to pouring huge time into making this happen. There was quite a few slips and trips along the way.
Big thanks to Plohl for helping make it happen, Sonke for the emergency steering shaft and the guys at Automotive plus for getting me parts I didn't know I needed.

It's an absolute pig to drive for a heap of reasons that aren't the engines fault but feels like it should be fun.

Re: sailaholic NA8
Managed to get the car booked in with Garry Stewart on Friday prior to a skid pan morning for a bucks party today.
Despite being a bit of a rush there was no major dramas. Garry generally thought the engine preformed well give I still had the stock cross over, maf and airbox installed.
Made 160 whp at 7300 and about 110 ftlb of torque.
I'm pretty happy with the car on the road which was my real goal rather then a HP figure. With a bit more time I'll sort a better intake out and take it back to see what else can be gained.
