Re: Ready to be convinced
If you come to WTAC hopefully I can show what a naturally aspirated registered car can do.
If you want to go non road registered and stay NA look at this car http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=72775 which is some 12 secs faster than me around SMSP GP. However hopefully this year I will claw back that 12 secs!

Re: Ready to be convinced
I drove an SP a few years back. It was rubbish (I've owned Evos and GTRs in the past). My current 5 is adequate.

Travelator wrote:ManiacLachy - appreciate you sharing your perspective (it's why I started looking at mx5s to begin with). Do you think though, having experienced the extra power, that you could go back and be satisfied?? My first car was perhaps comparable speed wise (100kw engine in a 1070kg kerb weight car) and I do wonder if I could be fully satisfied with that level of accessible acceleration again (or would the whole "drive a slow car fast" thing be fun enough?).
If the MX-5 was a 2nd car for fun, and I had a fast capable daily, then yes I would go for the all-motor now. I had a drive of Magpie's car and Slugdub's, both are built na motors and were a lot of fun. Magpie's is a bit extreme though

It's down to personal tastes of course. And having said all of that, I'll be keeping my SE, and continue to pour money into it, and I'll have a ton of fun with it.

Re: Ready to be convinced
ManiacLachy is the first turbo car I have every dríven, well discounting turbo diesels. When compared to mine it had a very nice ride and more low down torque however throttle response below 5,000 was not the same as mine. But the throttle response above 5,500 the turbo wins and it has more 'kick' plus a distinct noise on gear changes. Mine makes burbling exhaust type noises instead.
ManiacLachy's also had a very nice ride, need some more time in it though to give a better answer. Plus since I have nothing else to compare it to
Slugdub's was chalk and cheese when compared to mine, because of differences in steering and brakes.
It was a good opportunity to drive each others cars and will have to do it again

Re: Ready to be convinced
well there's only one way to find out if a high hp car is any good and that's drive it!
only problem mine has not been dríven for 5 weeks and if you read my story about the magnetic key holder I had in the boot with the $2000 in cash inside it
-well I didn't close the boot correctly -eyesight not perfect and the battery is now flat
so I decided to kick it over and found that out plus when I arrived home 5 weeks ago it was low on gas and has never been started since. so the wife was going out and I said take this motorcycle gas container and get me 10 litres of 98 premium - later I will take that car out for a run for an evaluation
well not yet as its on the battery charger and low on gas. I think 5 weeks out of the car I will have a very good idea on if this car is any good or not
I bet before I get to the town open limits - I am thinking price hike! price hike!
yes its that good!
high performace 300 hp car are hard to drive around town?....No! I think if my daughter can drive it in the rain for 100 odd klm and 400 klm in total on the return from the upgrades I am sure a few of you guys could drive it too. I actually drove it about 9000 klm with not one slight misshape -correction did get an increase with a high idle issue but really its just a friggin hairdressers car - a hairdressers car
with a bit of get up and go
well actually a lot
now on mine the power starts in any gear at 1000 and ends at 7500 -no dead spots -no peak power spots. just put your foot down and one smooth power run. repeat no lag anywhere -press pedal and go! believe it or not!
either way ianr believes it!

Re: Ready to be convinced
why would you spend $20 K on an SP when you could have had a seriously sorted SE for $16K
but wait..... that's no longer happening

He's referring to BillyBunter trying to sell his 300whp built SE for $16k. For some reason no body jumped at the bargain and BB has withdrawn the sale.

Re: Ready to be convinced
There's obviously a few reasons why... Its a great looking car but the paint job and interior is done to Billy's individual taste. I'm sure if it was 100% stock, giving a wider net of potential buyers a blank canvas to work off.

Jump on the offer from a forum member for a drive. You'll get a snippet of what a roadster life has to offer, given your history of coupes/sedans. Will it be a garage queen, weekender or daily?
It's true that you won't really understand the passion for driving until you've owned a roadster (i.e not just a 15 minute drive).

Re: Ready to be convinced
In my opinion many just don't get it
they buy a MX5 and then turn it into a sedan....hardtop, more power and 5 minutes later they sell it
Lost opportunity.....
It's a roadster....mean to be dríven with top down, wind in the hair, sound of the exhaust/motor.....working the gears driving though a twisty country road
you drive it...open top....and all the senses are stirred
Many put a hard top on it and turbo it....then drive up and down the hwy....
Like marrying a gorgeous woman and always using viagra and a condom.....

Re: Ready to be convinced
An MX-5 is a lot of things to a lot of people.
It's a classic Roadster, but also a 90's Japanese car built with regular Mazda parts, ripe for tuning. There's enough aftermarket parts to build it into a V8 monster or change the look of it until it's unrecognisable.
You can't miss the point of an MX-5 because there's no right or wrong way to do it.

But wasnt that car 18k firm ? I can't decode the riddles.
Anyway, I feel bad about derailing the thread. OP wants a ride in a fast SE, can anyone help ?
Isn't there a monthly meet at Pie in the Sky, do any SE's show up to that ? Maybe try a post in the FB group ?
