Miata.net Hacked

Postby Rocky » Thu Sep 15, 2016 5:02 pm

Anyone else received this:

"This past weekend, Miata.net suffered a breach of our servers by hackers who gained access to all our servers. Although we don't have direct evidence that they accessed the encrypted passwords stored in the database, prudence dictates that its better to be safe. As a result, we recommend that you change your password on the Miata.net forum.
We recommend using a strong password, as its much more difficult to decrypt. In addition, we recommend that you not use the same password here that you use on other sites.
We apologize for the inconvenience.--
Miata.net Administration"

Yep
Seriously haven't they got something better to hack? Like trumps e-mail server?

I dunno, have you looked at the prices of a kg works cluster or a nielex tombstone?
Worth more than solid gold.

The way I understand it Miatanet makes money through sponsors who advertise on the site.
What they may be able to use are all the members details. Sell them off on the black market maybe?
But financial details are not part of the equation.
Thrumps emails aren't going to make them money but it would be a great public service to the wider world.... And some serious gossip.

The thought behind hacks like this is that, given that many people use the same password on multiple sites, if the hackers have email addresses with corresponding passwords, they can throw 1000s of those against other, more useful, websites and in many cases will get in. So it's not that accessing miata.net accounts interests them, but what they might be able to find elsewhere does. Long story short, changing your miata.net password is a good idea, but it's not really that account they want. It's where else you use that email and password combo that's under more threat. Change those, too.
