Nice effort Alex, def a high 12 in there just need a decent launch with a lower 60ft, easier said than done with the mx5. Looking forward to seeing what this thing makes with some more boost :)

Let's try this again - Alex's NB

Postby A.Chen89 » Wed Jan 22, 2014 9:16 pm

Soooo here's the flip side of owning a turbo MX-5.

Met up with a couple if forum goers for a run at the drags - was good seeing everyone giving it a hit!

First run ran a sloppy 14.1, second run I dumped it from 5500 and bam! Broken driveshaft. Sheared off cleanly into two.

Image

Looks like the Borg is very good at doing it's job.

Better the driveshaft than the gearbox though, hopefully will get it up running again soon.

Anyone got a spare shaft ;)?

Not the end of the world.

On the bright side, found out it weighs ~1160kg with a full tank of petrol, rollbar, power steering, A/C etc. not bad!

Bump from the dead.

Sorted out some teething issues and found some time to play cars again. Originally tracked this last October at Circuit Club but had overheating issues with no under tray and a seized sliding pin in a front brake caliper.
Also had a corroding radiator as the result of electrolysis which hopefully I've fixed now.

Went to a Circuit Club track day on Saturday and managed to drive the car trouble free all day! Oil temp gets a bit too high but hopefully some ducting will sort that out.

I installed a beat rush under tray but still haven't closed up the sides so I believe the air is passing through mostly the radiator but not going through the oil cooler. The cooler isn't in the best spot but should be able to make it work - the AC condenser also doesn't help.

And here's a video!

Boost is great, still learning how to drive the thing as my lines weren't clean as before but its a start! I don't think I'll be tracking this in the middle of summer.

Water-methanol injection Alex! In fact, you can just use it to run distilled water.

Hmm haha that seems a bit extreme. I'll probably forget to top the tank up

Nothing wrong with that...just lose some power (it is noticeable though!).

Once I'm finished with the water-meth mix, I'm just going to use distilled water and see how that goes, and just keep water-meth for track days.

Thread revival!
Still alive and the car still goes well; albeit after having fixed a couple of oil leaks and putting in a new Kaaz 1.5 way LSD. The Borg still spools strong with its signature kettle boiling sound.

Still have a bit of an issue with oil temps on the track since the cooler is located on the steering rack but working on a solution!

Also had some ducting made up; made a world of difference at Wakefield! Temperature never moved above 90 degrees on the Queen's Birthday public holiday track day.

Is it me or is every other car massive?

Also did a bit of drivng recently, managed to do Thunderbolts Way and ended up at Walcha. Great drive but the surface was a bit less then desirable in certain sections.

Hopefully looking at doing another day at Marulan sooner or later as well as giving South Circuit another go again.

That's fine looking Integra in those pics!

Nice views on the drive to Walcha. I miss going out on group drives...should get onto it again!

Car is looking fine as usual! Good to see you really getting to use it. I just bought some work wheels, which are polished with Gold centres. Wasnt really sure how it would look on a silver car but just saw your pics again and actually think it will look great!

Nice setup.
Has the silver coating on the turbo manifold lasted? Does it still look good?

Yep the ceramic coating has held up well; still looks the same as the day it got coated
