Sunlight silver colour match
Hi guys.
I hear the duplicolor arctic silver is a pretty close match to sunlight silver (22v).
Anyone tried it? How close is close?

Why not just get a can of paint mixed up?
Will be an exact match then.
Just go to your nearest paint supplier, or super cheap do mixing if that's easier.

you can even just get a rattle can from you local auto accessories shop for about $14 a pop.Try a small spot on your car out of the way or if you have a piece of metal use that & compare it.
you can get good results with rattle cans but it must be said. Factory paint seems to have a deeper red even with the right paint code on Patchy. Even with plenty of coats thick & thin.
On that note....its taken me years to perfect the rattle can thing. But small round section is quite easy to get pretty good.Big flat sections like the bonnet or boot lid can be problematic.
don't use any detergent when cleaning the surface.Even before sanding. Ive done this in the past & ended up with moisture bubbles.
and yes youve probably read it everywhere. Patience is a virtue. I must be one of the most impatient individuals around when it comes to that sort of thing.But yes the surface has to be clean mostly to stop bigger scratches appearing while sanding the surface.
NB8B's have a clear coat which is a bit more work.....but process is the same you just have to do it twice.

I haven't tried so I can't comment. I've also been looking at getting some touch up paint for my sunlight silver NB so I might give SCA a try.
On a related note, does anyone know what the engine bay paint colour is on a sunlight silver NB? It's almost like a flat grey.
I read somewhere that it is the same sunlight silver, applied without a clear coat, but I find it hard to believe as the colours are so different!

I agree that you should get the paint number that your car has- i.e. that tells the supplier what to mix. Buy paint supplies from an automotive paint supplier i.e. people supplying the auto and other trades. I dont buy from SCA or any of the other accessories places because it is not their core business and staff are often limited in knowledge .PS for luzinit- its unlikely the under bonnet colour is listed but a good paint guy might be able to assist- get them to take a look under bonnet and then have a natter. Clear coat is not going to change a colour.

Metallics are affected by all sorts of things - angle, distance, speed of application. It is an art.
Engine bays generally don't get clear applied for our common cars.

I had forgotten I had posted this. Thanks for all the info.
I didn't realise you could get colour matched rattle cans by paint code. I saw heaps overseas, but can't ship.
I'm pretty handy with a can, and prep is everything, so thanks for the heads up on the soap.
I'll have a look into the matching.

Paint preparation- no soap. Prespsol- soap is for skin -prepsol is the standard for metal prep.

Does prepsol also apply to plastic, or would you recommend another prepaint prep?

Plastic is prepped with wax and grease remover and then primed with plastic primer which is basically super glue in an aerosol.

22v is one of the easier silvers to get right. Not many tinters in it. Plus the ones that are don't contrast too much. Very basic colour.
Yes the engine bay is sunlight silver.
Clearcoat affects not only gloss but colour as well.
It changes the light refraction to make it either lighter or darker. Especially so with metallics, hence hearing painters refer to "flip", "flop" and "face".
With metallic, remember to overlap. Meaning spray a larger area of silver to primer, and then a larger area of clear to silver. It helps blend it in.
Also a good trick is to do a last rub down when it has hardened for a day with 2000 grit or finer. Use plenty of water. It'll get rid of that rough effect called orange peel. Essentially your removing the high spots. Then polish well and you'll be sweet.

PREPSOL is the term used by Duco paints etc so its become generic- "Prepsol in known under many different trade names eg. Prepwash, Autoclean, Solwash etc. It is a solvent cleaner used to clean panels of dirt, grease, silicone, natural oils (such as finger marks) etc. Sign panels, banners, vehicle panels etc are cleaned with this solution prior to adhering self adhesive vinyl. This ensures good adhesion between the products".
Painters reckon always wash product down before painting. It does remove wax polish silicone etc and the latter item is a painting killer contaminant. No probs using a bit of detergent for cleaning but a Preposl type product is the last to be sure. You can buy Prepsol or equivalent in paint shop esp automotive and I always keep some handy. .

Best option, talk to the shop when you get the paint mixed.
They'll know what the best type of products are to use with the paint they're mixing for you.
Generally though the process for any part, metal or plastic, is:
Wash
Rinse (lots)
Wax and grease remover (prepsol or whatever your preferred brand is)
Primer
Colour coat
Wetsand if needed.

Clear coat
Wetsand
Cut
Polish.
Of course, allow plenty of curing time for any paint before sanding or polishing, I usually leave a day at minimum.

I would be inclined to try to polishing the bay first before reprainting. It may also require a gentle little cut back.
The colour codes are on your compliance plate as well as all over the net.

If you want product codes to bring into a store to ask for, just ask. There a a lot of people that sell paint, that actually have no clue what to do. Usually the big retailers that hire kids. I'm happy to supply part numbers for motospray products if you got somewhere that stocks that brand. I have them in my memory (I think i need a new job
)
