external prv q's

Postby 3gress » Wed Aug 31, 2016 12:37 pm

I'm swapping to a peterson external pressure relief valve, i have the plumbing arrangement sorted though still unsure how to modify the factory internal relief valve. Can anyone help with what needs to be done?
I came across a thread where nitrodann suggested removing it completely though it would seem i need to replace the spring with a piece of machined barstock to keep the relief valve cylinder fully closed to prevent oil pressure dumping back into the sump. I must say it was 3am after a long hard day when i examined the pump internals so i may be way off here :(
Any advice on subject is welcome. An external prv is not absolutely necessary currently however it would make it easier for me to get all the bits for oil pan and ewp fittings welded in one go since i have to travel a distance to the fabricator.
Also advice on best location for prv return line to block. I figured roughly between engine mount and alternator as high as possible in pan.
Thanks guys.

Post script tangent: madjak offered a template for sump baffle that would be pragmatic to install while oil pan is off..

Yes, you need to shim the oil pump
